Malibu blaze destroys homes, 1,500 people evacuated
A wildfire driven by powerful Santa Ana winds forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes in the Malibu Hills, authorities said. Flames destroyed a church and several homes, one of them a landmark castle. About 700 firefighters worked to protect hundreds of homes in upscale communities. About 1,500 people have been evacuated, officials said.
The Harris Fire that began about 70 miles east of San Diego has burned 2,500 acres between Tecate and Harris Ranch Road and injured at least four firefighters and killed one person. A wildfire burns 3,000 acres between Ramona and Santa Ysabel, and moves northwest toward Lake Sutherland. “It's just like the Cedar Fire. It was just like the Cedar Fire right off the bat,” one official says.
