Cricket - it rocks
The English just got done with a test match series on those islands to the south of us that we sometimes go to during spring break to smoke some ganja. 4 test matches, that's 20 days of exciting cricket action. Well, more like 19, because the 1st test ended on the fourth day. And what was the score after 4 matches & 19 days of thrilling cricket?
West Indies 1, England 0.

k-mad already scheming to end their careers, or, why does k-mad do it?
Indian baseball players chase American dream
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Two Indian youngsters chasing the American baseball dream have taken an important first step when the Pittsburgh Pirates signed them up as non-draft free agents.
Left-hander Rinku Singh and Dinesh Kumar Patel pitched in front of scouts from the Pirates and other Major League organizations on November 12 before being chosen, a statement on the club website said.
The players, with shoulder strength gained through their initial training to become javelin throwers, earned a U.S. training stint in May after topping a pitching contest in India, "The Million-Dollar Arm," which offered the winner $100,000.
Singh, 20, who won that contest and Patel, 19, will now take part in the Pirates' Minor League spring training next year.
Their promoters hope they can make it as professionals, saying such success would boost baseball in cricket-mad India in the same way that Yao Ming's move to the NBA created a fan base for basketball in China. . .

NEW YORK (AP) _ Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Leander Paes of India won their first U.S. Open mixed doubles title by beating Liezel Huber of the United States and Jamie Murray of Britain 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the final Thursday.
Paes has won four Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, and Black has won three — but this was the first for each at Flushing Meadows and the first for them as a team.
They were seeded fifth at the U.S. Open. Huber and Murray were unseeded.

Cricket goes Bollywood

Boys, take at look at this. Take a good hard look at this picture. Explain to me what this has to do with cricket? I mean, I understand the (American) football oaf fans have to be entertained somehow in the 2 hours of a game where nothing is happening, but cricket? Oh, right, cricket has 8 times as much time with nothing going on. Never mind, bring 'em on...
This is part of the inauguration of the new Indian Premier League, so they pulled all the stops. It's good to know our cheerleaders can be exported to bring in much needed foreign currency to help in the ongoing financial crisis. Things the US exports has been going down over the years, but they could represent a new boo

Cricket Rules - Post Zzz of Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Y'all made me do this...
Cricket equipment guide
Cricket is a sport where you need a few bits of specialist equipment to keep you safe.
Most clubs provide bats and all the protective gear, but you may want your own kit.
In fact, there can be so much kit you may feel as though you're packing to go on holiday.
But a hard cricket ball can do a lot of damage - so protective gear is essential.
It will stop you getting hurt, though you may find the odd bump and bruise slips through now and then.
My Personal Favorite piece of equipment:
You won't need to guess where the most painful place to be hit by a cricket ball is - particularly for males.
A box should always be worn to protect the "privates" when batting against a cricket ball or other hard ball.
Wicketkeepers and fielders close to the wicket should also wear a box at all times.
You won't regret it. Neither will your kids.

Cricket Rules - Post 5 (i think) of 473
This one is the closest to the really cool Aussie Rules signal. It means 6 runs have been scored, or, in baseball terms, it might be, it could be, it is, a home run, holy cow.

Cricket Rules - Post 4 of 473
Fielding Positions
Fielding is a crucial part of cricket and there are many areas where a fielder will be placed.
The position names can seem a little strange to the untrained eye.
You can field in the slips, at gully, at square leg or even at silly point.
When a position is described as 'deep' or 'long' as in deep mid-wicket or long off then the fielder is usually placed right out on the boundary.
Similarly a position prefixed as 'short' or 'silly', for example silly point means a fielder is placed in closer than a conventional point fielder would normally stand.

Cricket Rules - Post 3 of 473
Ball-tampering is one of the most emotive and controversial issues in Test cricket, especially when accusations involve Pakistan.
When umpire Darrell Hair awarded England five penalty runs for Pakistan violating law 42.3 for deliberately altering the condition of the ball during the fourth Test at The Oval, the Australian official provoked a huge Pakistani backlash.
Ball tampering is tantamount to cheating, everything that contravenes the spirit of this most gentlemanly of sports.
Unfortunately these accusations are nothing new to Pakistani cricket.
The slur has tainted the nation since all-rounder Imran Khan first extracted exaggerated late movement with the older ball during the 1970s.

HOW DOES BALL TAMPERING FAVOUR BOWLERS?
Bowlers shine one side of a new cricket ball while the opposite is left to deteriorate through natural wear and tear.
This process helps bowlers swing the ball in the air.
In simple terms, the aerodynamics of bowling mean the shiny side travels faster through the air, while the rough side acts as a brake, pushing the ball in the direction of the rough side.
But as the ball loses its early shine, it begins to swing less and it is not until it gets older and rougher that it begins to deviate again, a process known as reverse swing.

But as the ball loses its early shine, it begins to swing less and it is not until it gets older and rougher that it begins to deviate again, a process known as reverse swing.

"As the ball becomes rougher, it will take on a different characteristic as it deteriorates," said former England fast bowling coach Troy Cooley, who helped England's bowlers use the phenomenon to great success during the 2005 Ashes series.
"So if you present the ball as an outswinger, the ball has deteriorated so much on the rough side that it takes on the characteristics of the shiny side.
"Which means a natural outswinger will become an inswinger and conversely, an inswinger an outswinger."
LAW 42.3c (FAIR AND UNFAIR PLAY):
It is unfair for anyone to rub the ball on the ground for any reason, interfere with any of the seams or the surface of the ball, use any implement, or take any other action whatsoever which is likely to alter the condition of the ball
The laws of the game clearly state fielders can polish, clean or dry the ball, but nothing more.
The batsmen, pitch and outfield all contribute to the natural wear and tear of the ball, which usually starts to reverse swing around the 40- to 50-over mark during a Test match.
However, the earlier the ball starts to reverse swing, the more problems it poses for the batsmen.

Bowlers can facilitate the deterioration by manipulating the condition of the ball illegally.
The seam, which acts as the ball's rudder when it swings, can be picked with fingernails.
The nails can also help to further scuff the rough side of the ball.
