this is probably nothing to worry about

Patients Cut Back on Prescriptions, Doctor Visits Amid Tough Times

The health sector tends to be pretty resilient during economic downturns, because even in tight times, people generally make medical care a priority.

But this year things aren’t quite hewing to past form. A number of indicators show that patients, pressed by a combination of economic woes and shrinking health benefits, have been cutting back on care...

“Since I don’t work out of the home, it’s not that crucial” to have the cataract fixed, she reasons. “And I can drive with one eye.”

That's the American spirit! Our Noble Plutocrats are having to retire to eight-figure severance packages in total disgrace. In the big scheme of things, your ability to see isn't that important.

Sarah Palin's got electrolytes - it's what plants crave

The Nation on Sara Palin:

Mr. McCain has based his campaign on the idea that this is a dangerous world -- and that Barack Obama is too inexperienced to deal with it. He has also acknowledged that his advanced age -- he celebrated his 72nd birthday on August 29th -- makes his choice of vice-president unusually important. Now he has chosen as his running mate, on the basis of the most cursory vetting, a first-term governor of Alaska.
...
The political calculations behind Mr. McCain’s choice hardly look robust. Mrs. Palin is not quite the pork-busting reformer that her supporters claim. She may have become famous as the governor who finally killed the infamous “bridge to nowhere” -- the $220m bridge to the sparsely inhabited island of Gravina, Alaska. But she was in favour of the bridge before she was against it (and told local residents that they weren’t “nowhere to her”). As mayor of Wasilla, a metropolis of 9,000 people, she initiated annual trips to Washington, DC, to ask for more earmarks from the state’s congressional delegation, and employed Washington lobbyists to press for more funds for her town.
...
The moose in the room, of course, is her lack of experience. When Geraldine Ferraro was picked as Walter Mondale’s running-mate, she had served in the House for three terms. Even the hapless Dan Quayle, George Bush senior’s sidekick, had served in the House and Senate for 12 years. Mrs Palin, who has been the governor of a state with a population of 670,000 for less than two years, is the most inexperienced candidate for a mainstream party in modern history.

Inexperienced and Bush-level incurious. She has no record of interest in foreign policy, let alone expertise. She once told an Alaskan magazine: “I’ve been so focused on state government; I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq.” She obtained an American passport only last summer to visit Alaskan troops in Germany and Kuwait. This not only blunts Mr McCain’s most powerful criticism of Mr Obama. It also raises serious questions about the way he makes decisions.

Then again, what would you expect from... wait... that column appeared in The Economist. Sorry.

more liberal nitpicking - the kind of thing only an America-hating smarty-pants elitist would notice

The McCain Tech Policy In Action!

"...this latest gaff, running a picture of Walter Reed Middle School on the green screen behind McCain instead of Walter Reed Hospital because they screwed up a Google images search, has certainly cemented not merely McCain, but the McCain campaign, as being in the ranks of the terminally clueless on matters technical."

because he'll get tough with Czechoslovakia

And they trust him to deal at long last with the Habsburg Empire...

While 56 percent said Obama knows enough about world affairs to be a good president, more, 72 percent, said so about McCain. Pitted head-to-head on the issue, McCain was judged as the one with better knowledge of the world by a better than 2 to 1 margin.

Only 12?

Believe it or not

News Item: Twelve percent of Americans still believe Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Ignorant, and proud.

At last, our dream of a Nation free of annoying, pointy-headed elitists is within our ham-fisted reach

America’s human capital is tested

A startling and profoundly important fact about the US economy has received surprisingly little attention. The educational quality of the country’s workers is starting to decline – not just relatively (because other countries are catching up and moving ahead) but also, for the first time, in absolute terms. Over the coming years, baby-boomers departing from the labour force will have better educational qualifications than the younger workers replacing them.

K-Mad's back!

Diamondbacks placed catcher Chris Snyder on the disabled list with a left testicular fracture. That's gotta be even worse than an anal fissure. Snyder was injured when he was hit by a foul tip last night. Miguel Montero will start and be backed up by Robby Hammock while Snyder is out. He's worth adding in NL-only leagues.

Gluttony

BERLIN - A catfish apparently choked to death after trying to chow down on a soccer ball in the locks of a Bavarian canal.http://www.shortnews.de/start.cfm?id=716083
German police said the 6 1/2-foot-long fish was found dead Monday, floating on the surface of the water with a blue-and-white soccer ball in its mouth.
"He tried to eat the ball and it got stuck," police spokesman Karl-Heinz Kuberlein said Tuesday.

For the record. It was near Wuerzburg. The German Press made no speculations as to European-Cup-Loss-provoked suicide.

Look for him in a 94 year old ballpark soon

Padres released outfielder Jim Edmonds.
That was quick. The Padres acquired Edmonds during the offseason and now cut him loose after 90 at-bats despite owing him $6 million. Edmonds has hit just .178/.265/.233 while showing decreased range in center field, but giving up on him this early is still plenty surprising. Jody Gerut has been called up to replace him on the roster and could see time in center field along with Scott Hairston. Chase Headley is still waiting in the wings at Triple-A.

numbers schmumbers... why should we just count numbers, as if they were like votes or some s#i+?

Dis took balz...

"We don't think this is just going to be about some numerical metric," Clinton strategist Geoff Garin told Dan Balz in the April 23 Washington Post. "When we get to those days after June 3rd, we think the real choice is who's proven themselves to be the best candidate."

News item: With baby boomers preparing to retire as the best educated and most skilled workforce in U.S. history, a growing chorus of demographers and labor experts is raising concerns that workers in California and the nation lack the critical skills needed to replace them.

An ingredient of polycarbonate plastic, BPA is one of the most widely used synthetic chemicals in industry today. It can seep from hard plastic beverage containers such as baby bottles, as well as from liners in cans containing food and infant formula.
