Da Mare to Fung -- I got your bailout right here
The fix isn’t in for beleaguered Cook County homeowners struggling to pay rising property tax bills. But it might as well be.
Mayor Daley today urged homeowners to appeal their "illogical" assessments to the Cook County Board of Review — and commissioner Larry Rogers Jr. all but guaranteed those who do that adjustments will be made to reflect the downturn in the housing market.

Chicago is back in the duck-torturing business
Chicago again foie gras-friendly zone
May 14, 2008
(AP) — The Chicago City Council has repealed its controversial two-year-old ban on foie gras, a delicacy made of duck and goose liver.
The vote was led by Mayor Richard M. Daley, who called the measure that went into effect in August 2006 the "silliest" ordinance the council's ever passed.
Supporters of the ban consider foie gras cruel because geese and ducks are force-fed to make their livers bigger. The measure passed Wednesday by a vote of 37-6 with no debate. Its sponsor, Alderman Joe Moore, shouted his objections.
The Illinois Restaurant Assn. and a local restaurant had filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to overturn the ban, but a U.S. District Court judge dismissed the effort last June.

now you can use the latest technology available on the internets to track your complete and udder lack of forward movement, or, expect delays (cont'd)
News item: The Chicago Transit Authority has been swallowed into the universe of the Google Inc.’s mapping technology.
Users who turn to the Google Maps for directions can now find an option providing step-by-step instructions on how to take CTA buses and trains to their destinations. The service melds the CTA’s existing Trip Planner with the Google Maps.
For example, typing a starting address and a destination of “Solchers Fielt” into the Google’s “Take Public Transit” function provides suggested CTA options, as well as bus and train departure times. Those times should become more accurate by next year, when all CTA buses become part of its bus tracker program.
“The CTA is now part of (a) global community and offers people the opportunity to choose a more environmentally friendly way to get where they want to go,” Mayor Richard M. Daley said at a Tuesday news conference announcing the partnership.

Reader on Da Mare's library tax: fullas#i+
Daley says tax hike would help libraries
"Everybody wants a new library," he said. "They also want extended hours. They want a lot of things with libraries ... Libraries are extensions of the school system, of the learning environment. If a society is going to do well, you put the money into education and you put money into libraries."
Thar She Blows
The white whale lurking behind the mayor's new tax increases
He promised to use some of the new tax revenue to "build or renovate more than ten libraries across the city." That pledge caught most listeners by surprise. Nothing against libraries. But with all the problems facing the city—failing schools, mass layoffs of teachers, nurses, and prosecutors, the CTA yet again threatening to raise fares and shut down routes, and the county crying for its own huge tax hike—are branch libraries really a top priority? Most aldermen figured the mayor was using them to conceal his true purposes.
