In other words, it was ''Welcome to Chicago, Jim.'' And while he's still 37, still can't run, still can't make the highlight dives, he has been a big catch for the Cubs. Edmonds still has something left after all.

And it's something the Cubs needed: a left-handed hitter to share the job in center field.

Jones was hitting just .165/.244/.253 in 79 at-bats, so it's hard to blame the Tigers from being frustrated with him. Still, there's a good chance he'll bounce back and be an adequate platoon outfielder for another team, perhaps the Padres or the Marlins. Mike Joyce seems poised to replace him versus right-handers for now, but the Tigers also have Marcus Thames, Brandon Inge and Ryan Raburn as alternatives in left field. The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Adam Eaton may have pitched himself out of the No. 5 spot in the Phillies rotation.
Eaton allowed six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings on Thursday to raise his spring ERA to 7.41, and manager Charlie Manuel didn't exactly commit to using him. "I don't know... We'll see when we get there. We've got plenty of time. [Next] Saturday's a long way off. Hell, I might be dead by then," Manuel said. The Phillies could turn to Chad Durbin, who has a 5.25 ERA this spring, in his place.
