Email of the Day: Reaganomics is a totally failed policy

I loved your recap of the McCain interview with Brokaw. Just wanted to point out that not only did Reagan raise taxes during a recession, but Bill Clinton raised taxes in 1993 a year after his election. We were mired in the worst recession since the depression at the time. Not one GOP Congressman or Senator voted for Clinton’s tax raise at the time and they all claimed it would ruin the economy, the same as now. Well, as you know, Bill raised taxes and we saw the greatest growth in our history along with record surpluses that will probably never be equaled. Under Reagan we saw the beginning of the deregulation era that brought us the savings and loan crisis, the Enron debacle and this current banking crisis that we find ourselves in today. When Reagan took office in 1980 our total debt was under 1 trillion dollars. Today it is 11 trillion and we had surpluses under Clinton. So under Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2 we increased our national debt from 1 trillion to 11 trillion.
It’s time that everybody realized that Milton Friedman and Reaganomics is a totally failed policy and until we do realize it, we are doomed to keep repeating it. It’s remarkable that more so called experts have not addressed the failed “deregulation” policies of the GOP as the main contributor to this collapse of our banking system.

Another Quitter
GOP Loses Another Leader in Congress
Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds (RN.Y.) announced yesterday that he will not seek another term in office, becoming the latest member of the former GOP leadership team to step down in the past two years.
And these are the same losers who want us to stay in Iraq until the end of the time? The party of Americans has turned into the party of AmeriCANTS. Well, don't let the Capitol Hill door hit you on the ass on the way out. Best to put that tail between your legs, too, like a skunk...

Who is the biggest @$$HOLE Republican running?
Smiff ranks 'em:
1) Fred Thompson - I really HATE this asshole. Every time he opens his mouth i want to pound his face into a bloody pulp.
2) 9/11 - He's got his own t-shirt.
3) Mitt Romney - Seems the most hated by the other candidates, and if the other assholes hate you most - that should tell us something. And his real first name is Willard.
4) John McCain - He's old and ornery. I can see it, "You damn kids, get off my property!"
5) Ron Paul - Appears rather non-offensive, but did anyone see the sickening racist comments in the newsletter he used to publish? Even though it was HIS newsletter, he said he didn't write that stuff. Or edit it out, apparently...
6) Mike Huckabee - Seems almost human for a Repoop.
If i included non-factors Duncan Hunter and Alan Keyes, it would be a three-way tussle for 3rd place with Mutt. Unfortunely, you don't see enough of these two clowns to truly measure how big of assholes they are.

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) arrested: Guilty!

He grew up on a ranch outside Midvale in Washington County. (see: Brokeback Mountain)
Craig was a member of the Idaho National Guard from 1970 to 1972. (see: draft dodging)
Craig has been on the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association since 1983. (see: He sees dead people.)
On June 11, 2007, Senator Craig was arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on suspicion of lewd conduct. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct in August 2007. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees and was given one year of probation. A 10-day jail sentence was stayed. According to Roll Call, the arresting officer filed the following in his report of the incident:
At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot.... The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area. Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times.
Craig stated "that he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom and that his foot may have touched mine," the arrest report states. Craig also told the arresting officer that he reached down with his right hand to pick up a piece of paper that was on the floor. "It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper," the arresting officer said in the report.
At one point Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, "What do you think about that?" A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a 'he said/he said misunderstanding,' and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday [August 27] afternoon.

FULL@$#i+ Flip-Flopper
In the past two years, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota twice vetoed legislation to raise the state’s gas tax to pay for transportation needs.
Now, with at least five people dead in the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge here, Mr. Pawlenty, a Republican, appears to have had a change of heart.
“He’s open to that,” Brian McClung, a spokesman for the governor, said Monday of a higher gas tax. “He believes we need to do everything we can to address this situation and the extraordinary costs.”
In fairness, it's only been recently discovered that bridges and roads cost money to build and maintain.
