He's Back: Ed Wade Still An Idiot

Astros acquired outfielder Michael Bourn, RHP Geoff Geary and third baseman Mike Costanzo from the Phillies for RHP Brad Lidge and infielder Eric Bruntlett.
Mike Costanzo: He's a long shot to contribute in the majors.
Geoff Geary: Impossible. There was simply no way Ed Wade was going to pull off a five-player deal without getting himself a veteran middle reliever. It couldn't happen.
Michael Bourn: If you look at it as one year of Lidge for five for Bourn, it doesn't seem so bad. Still, the Astros just weakened their pen and their offense with this stroke.... Bourn wasn't a great OBP guy at the top levels of the minors and he strikes out quite a bit. He's a terrific defender and baserunner, but if he doesn't get on-base enough to be a leadoff guy, he'll barely be an adequate regular.
Brad Lidge: We're not at all impressed with Ed Wade's first move as Houston's GM. Bourn could have a long career as a fair regular, but he's basically another Willy Taveras for the Astros. If Lidge's arrival in Philadelphia results in Brett Myers' return to the rotation, this could be a big winner for Pat Gillick.

Right back in the lineup even though Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp both had nice games Wednesday, Luis Gonzalez went 0-for-4 Thursday against the Phillies.
Gonzalez is batting just .224 with one homer in 107 at-bats since the All-Star break. He's even stopped walking, with just five base on balls in the second half after he had 41 in 293 at-bats before the break. Especially after factoring in defense, the Dodgers would seem to be quite a bit better off with both Ethier and Kemp playing regularly right now. Blame Grady Little for continuing to sign play Gonzalez, but also blame GM Ned Colletti, who gave the 39-year-old a $7.35 million contract when there was very little upside to the move. Plus, Colletti had to know Little would stick with him far too long if he wasn't any good.

The Cubs and Orioles are discussing a Jay Payton trade, with the Cubs potentially receiving two mid-level prospects in return.
Payton for Matt Murton straight up would be a nice move for Baltimore. Payton makes sense for the Cubs as a more legitimate option in center field than Jacque Jones, though he's best utilized in a limited role. Ideally, he'd start over Jones against lefties and allow Jones to slide over to right whenever Cliff Floyd is dinged up.

Of course, Payton hasn't had an .809 OPS or better (which Murton did last year) outside of Colorado, but...you got it...HE'S A VETERAN! And really, he's not a very good CF. And most importantly, he SUCKS.

Cubs optioned outfielder Matt Murton to Triple-A Iowa.
Murton had a nice May while playing more than he did in April, but the move to recall Felix Pie left him out in the cold once again and he had fallen into a 1-for-18 slump over the last 16 days. The Cubs either need to find a larger role for him in the coming months or trade him. He certainly doesn't belong in the minors.
