Shawn Estes will take over the fifth spot in the Padres' rotation and make his first start Tuesday in Chicago. Estes is going to have to fail at least once more in the regular season before convincing everyone that he doesn't belong. Perhaps Petco Park will help him retain a respectable ERA for a month or so, but the Padres should have stuck with Wilfredo Ledezma.

Padres purchased the contract of LHP Shawn Estes from Triple-A Portland. Estes will take the roster spot of Kevin Cameron. He was 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA in six Triple-A starts, but won't be worth using in fantasy leagues.

Shawn Estes (Tommy John surgery, sucking big-time) has been throwing 40-pitch bullpen sessions as he works to build up arm strength.
"I expected the worst the second time I threw, and it was the best I've felt," Estes said. "I don't want to fight the clock. If I have to go under the knife again, and miss another year, I'm 36 before I get back on the mound again." Estes doesn't project to be an option for the Padres until late June or early July at the earliest.
