coming soon: MLB gets a chance to find out how nice a Miller Genuine Draft logo looks on a pitcher's mound

Ed Sherman: The Blackhawks have released an artist's rendition of what Wrigley Field will look like on Jan. 1 for the Winter Classic game against Detroit.

I have to say it looks pretty cool in more ways than one. The rink is going to be situated from first to third, and there will be lines showing the exact location of the baseball diamond. The on-deck circles will have the Hawks and Red Wings logos.

...there isn't any advertising on the boards or anywhere else on the field in the drawing. You know that won't be the case on Jan. 1.

In other news, the Blackhawks lead the league in attendance. Don't these lemmings know that all those local broadcasts of home games are driving down the value of their tickets?

I'm not sure this means anything as Philly fans have booed Santa Claus, Mike Schmidt, babies, grandmothers, people in wheelchairs, Ben Franklin etc.

Palin Booed at Philly Hockey Opener

Sarah Palin dropped the puck at the Philadelphia Flyers hockey game and was roundly booed by the crowd. A few fans were cheering but the booing was overwhelming and just went on and on and on. The
New York Times hockey blog said that the boos were "resounding (almost deafening)."

Video and choice comments at the Times.  Flyers & 76ers owner--nutball, right-wing, Bush-lovin' Ed Snider--makes the late, vampiric Bill Wirtz seem almost human in comparison...

forecast: rain

Blackhawks to play at Wrigley Jan. 1

(AP) — Wrigley Field is going to be the frozen confines on New Year's Day when the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings meet the Chicago Blackhawks outdoors in the Chicago Cubs' home park.

It will be the NHL's second Winter Classic. On January 1st in Buffalo, the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Buffalo Sabres before a crowd of 71,217.

Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz calls it a "once in a lifetime event" and says he expects the game to draw international interest.

The game will be televised nationally on NBC.

Bell's beer is coming back to Chicago

(Crain’s) — A year after pulling its beers from Chicago taps and liquor stores, Bell’s Brewery Inc. is making plans for a return.

The Kalamazoo, Mich., brewery stopped serving Chicago after a dispute with National Wine & Spirits Inc., the Indianapolis company that holds the rights to distribute Bell’s Beer in Illinois...

Brewery president Larry Bell says he has found a way to get around the impasse: He has created three new beers specifically for the Chicago market...

Mr. Bell, a Park Forest native, says he is finalizing contracts with two distributors to bring the beers, under the name Kalamazoo, to bars and restaurants in just a few areas of Chicago. The company already has federal permits to sell three varieties of Kalamazoo — Indian pale ale, porter and royal amber ale.

Each bottle will have a label reading: "Brewed especially for the people of the great state of Illinois." (even Blago? ed.)

Mr. Bell also needs a license and label approval from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, but litigation may be a more significant obstacle.

He says National Wine & Spirits officials have told him they will sue to stop the sale of Kalamazoo beers in Chicago. NWS executives could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

"I think it will be a very interesting court case"” Mr. Bell says. "They’ve promised to make it as messy and difficult as they can..."

"We know we’re going to get sued, so we’re just sticking our toes in the water with a couple of people who are willing to get in the water with us," (Smiff? ed.) Mr. Bell says...

something so totally stooopendous-sounding it's amazing nobody ever thought of it before

Home TV begins Nov. 11 vs. Wings

"We will deliver the experience of what it's like to be at a Blackhawk game at the United Center with live, on-site coverage during the pre- and postgame shows, locker-room access and player interviews, on-ice in-game player access and a number of additional elements fans will certainly appreciate," Corno said. "Chicago sports fans are in for a television experience like never before."

Wow! All this happens at a hockey game? Who knew?

New Hawks chairman Rocky Wirtz said the club is "entering a new era." *
