Josh Outman is out 12-18 months after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
He also had a bone spur, a railroad tie, and a family of racoons removed from his left elbow. It's a serious blow to the A's 2010, 2011, and 2012 rotation as Outman had emerged as the staff's best starter early this season

WHO declares SUCKS pandemic
06.16: SI.com is reporting that season-ending surgery is still a possibility for Prairie Chickens' starter Jake Peavy. Peavy and the Chix'zz medical staff will do everything in their power to rehab the injury without surgery, but the possibility still exists that it could be necessary if the ankle does not properly heal (see also: Wheelchair Baseball).

the mystical middle-eye-in-the-center-of-the-forehead wisdom of Dusty
John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Laynce Nix may have supplanted Chris Dickerson as the Reds' left fielder.
"I talked to (Chris) Dickerson," Dusty Baker said. "I said, ‘Hey man, you’ve got to go back to work. Nix is going good right now.’ It’s about winning ballgames. I’m not saying it’s all his fault. But Nix is doing his thing." The late former k-madder Nix is hitting .353 despite his bout with a virulent strain of posthumous SUCKS, while Dickerson is batting just .217 with 21 strikeouts in 60 at-bats.

match the projection with the analysis
1. 248 AB, .757 OPS, 3.9 RAR
2. 242 AB, .719 OPS, 1.0 RAR
A. On his way to another +.300 BA before fracturing kneecap (that was so k-mad!). Never the same after (see: k-mad), although xBA shows some bad luck (see also: k-mad). Super ct% means Avg will rebound. Again pegged for utility role, but that can change. Great end-gamer.
B. This is what end-game gambles look like: middling skills, doubles power, but tantalizing stretches inflate value. Rising GB% limits power. Defense is suspect, so regular playing time is a question. Take a pass.
Did you guess that 1 = B (Brendan Harris) and 2 = A (Jeff Keppinger)? Of course you did.

Indian baseball players chase American dream
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Two Indian youngsters chasing the American baseball dream have taken an important first step when the Pittsburgh Pirates signed them up as non-draft free agents.
Left-hander Rinku Singh and Dinesh Kumar Patel pitched in front of scouts from the Pirates and other Major League organizations on November 12 before being chosen, a statement on the club website said.
The players, with shoulder strength gained through their initial training to become javelin throwers, earned a U.S. training stint in May after topping a pitching contest in India, "The Million-Dollar Arm," which offered the winner $100,000.
Singh, 20, who won that contest and Patel, 19, will now take part in the Pirates' Minor League spring training next year.
Their promoters hope they can make it as professionals, saying such success would boost baseball in cricket-mad India in the same way that Yao Ming's move to the NBA created a fan base for basketball in China. . .
