"Now, if Hawk Harrelson knew any of this – if this announcer in the American League knew anything about the game of baseball – he would understand that in fact Mark Wegner had done the right thing."
Ooooooooh.

THIS WOULD BE TOTALLY AWESOME!
Santorum For Prez 2012
Huzzah, Rick Santorum! The former Pennsylvania senator, dog-sex fetishist, Nostradamus of Terror, and reluctant John McCain supporter seems to be plotting a presidential run for 2012, which would be awesome … for America.
He’ll be in Iowa in early October, and the only reason any non-resident would be in such a place at the onset of a six-month winter is to persuade the party wingnutry that they’re conservative enough to win the Iowa Straw Poll, which is a type of informal lottery for deranged religious nuts.
Remember how Mike Huckabee won Iowa the last time, and now he’s the president? Exactly.
Anyway, Santorum. Nice to see him back on the political stage after a several-year hiatus following his 2006 senatorial rout. Rumor has it he spent his time off having illegal gay man-on-dog sex, constantly.

The year of voting Biblically (cont'd)
So apparently there's something in the Old Testament about not voting for the black guy...
Survey: Religion Affects Willingness to Vote for Non-White Candidate
A white voter’s interpretation of the Bible also affected the person’s likelihood to vote for a racial minority candidate. Those who held more literal views of the Bible were more unwilling to vote across racial lines, the survey showed. . .
The survey found that white voters who belonged to a predominantly white congregation were among the least likely of all respondents to say they would vote for a non-white presidential candidate.

Christopher Buckley: wid da tarrists
No real surprise here, as you can't get through more than two or three sentences of his effete, snobby prose without being hit across the Sizzlin-Picante-dusted maw with the realization that he is an elitist. I'm sorry -- an ELITIST. Maybe they should feed him to a hungry McCain/Palin rally and watch them fight over who gets to devour his still-beating heart...
Christopher Buckley, Meet the Conservative Mob
Remember last week, when Christopher Buckley took his Obama endorsement to The Daily Beast so as not to offend his National Review readers? Well, no such luck. It looks like the aggrieved readers got to him anyway. Buckley writes about his abrupt departure from the magazine in his latest Daily Beast column.

whole lot of America-hating going on here...
Lipstick on a Wing Nut
§ Forty-seven million Americans lack health insurance. John Goodman, who has advised McCain on healthcare, has proposed redefining them as covered because, he says, anyone can get care at an ER. Do you agree with him?
§ Cindy and John McCain say you have experience in foreign affairs because Alaska is next to Russia. When did you last speak with Prime Minister Putin, and what did you talk about?
§ Approximately how old is the earth? Five thousand years? 10,000? 5 billion?
§ You've suggested that God approves of the Iraq War and the Alaska pipeline. How do you know?

this should bring out the nutjob vote
California Supreme Court overturns gay marriage ban
SAN FRANCISCO (obviously) - The California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage, paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry...
A coalition of religious and social conservative groups is attempting to put a measure on the November ballot that would enshrine California's current laws banning gay marriage in the state constitution.

Crazy People in Dugouts
There’ll be no holding back in 2008, says White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who blames his own change of style for his ballclub’s decline to 90 losses last season.

Romney: Quitter
The one ad he kept running out here was about how different he is from Hillary Clinton (maybe that's why she did so well here?). Willard seemed to be running his campaign in reverse - it was if he had already won the Republican nomination and was running against Hillary, who had won the Democratic nomination. I know that for many conservatives, just saying "Hillary Clinton" causes them to grow horns and a third eyeball, but MITT YOU WEREN'T RUNNING AGAINST HER. How about running some ads about McCain being a flip-flopper instead of a "straight talker". Or that fact that he said he doesn't know anything about the economy. Or the fact that he cozies upto and makes deals with pinko commies like Feingold and Ed Kennedy. Nope, he stuck with how "Hillary-care" was going to send everyone to the grave. What a maroon. And this guy made millions as a bidnessman? It must not be very hard then.
Oh, and this is priceless...
Romney at today's CPAC Wingnut Conference: ”If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.”

Is this an editorial or a a Swift Boat-style smear email?
Hard to tell...
Obama's Church
Election 2008: Since we first drew attention to Barack Obama's Afrocentric church a full 12 months ago, other media have weighed in. And additional disturbing information has come to light....
Investor's Business Daily? Never read it, but apparently they're trying to make the Wall Street Journal seem like Pravda.

Republican civil war: the Uncle Cholly / Chuck Norris wing vs. the plutocrats
Two-Buck Huck
Class war is forbidden in the Republican playbook. But Huckabee, despite an inept last week of campaigning, has forced the Republican party to face the Wal-Mart shoppers that they have long taken advantage of. He’s here. He’s Gomer. And he’s not going away.
Huckabee revels in the class war. He’s Two-Buck Huck, and darn proud of it. He likes nothing better than playing the Hick from Hope. He and his wife lived in a trailer for a while, he points out. His son killed a dog one summer, “a mangy dog” at that, as Huckabee explained to the befuddled national press corps. He said he used to eat squirrels, cooking them up in his popcorn popper. Ewwwwhhh!

more on rewarding incompetence
Hmmm, maybe the New York Fucking Times will give Dumbya his own column, too...
Bill Kristol is rewarded for being “wrong” on everything: NY Times gig is a comin’
This is really sick - especially when you consider it is happening at a time when the country is clearly moving more progressive, and there are so many good progressive columnists who have guest columned for the Times before (Ehrenreich, Katha Pollit, Tom Frank, etc.).
Either way - it is an absolute abomination from the standpoint of basic accountability. A pundit being factually wrong on almost everything he hung his hat on is rewarded by the largest newspaper in the world for his track record. If ever there was an example of the world of journalism literally thumbing its nose at basic accountability, this example of Bill Kristol falling up is it.

The Huckster vs. Rudy 9/11
Last week, Rudy's revelations placed him ahead of Huckabee as the Slimiest Republican Candidate (non-Tancredo division). But The Huckster seems to have pulled ahead this week, what with the many ridiculous things he's said in the past which no one cared about before he took the lead in Iowa polling:
Mike Huckabee in a speech to pastors in 1998:
"I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ."
Does the Southern Baptist convention state that Jesus was an American? Can someone check dat? And how does one exactly answer a clock? However, we do know this:
In August of 1998, Huckabee was one of 131 signatories to a full page USA Today Ad which declared: “I affirm the statement on the family issued by the 1998 Southern Baptist Convention.” What was in the family statement from the SBC? “A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ.” Read on…
(Mike Huckabee: Women Should Submit To Their Husbands)
Then there are his 1992 statements regarding AIDS:
"If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague."
"It is difficult to understand the public policy towards AIDS. It is the first time in the history of civilization in which the carriers of a genuine plague have not been isolated from the general population, and in which this deadly disease for which there is no cure is being treated as a civil rights issue instead of the true health crisis it represents."
Of course, the CDC determined in 1985 that AIDS could not be spread by casual contact.
On the other side, 9/11 said on Meet the Press on Sunday that a President's mistress should get Secret Service protection (i think he's speaking from experience here). He also said, "Nine eleven."
We're probably going to see how this plays out until the Iowa Caucus before declaring a winner...

Mike Huckabee...
a "Christian goofball of the highest order..."
Huckabee has also been accused of paying himself as a consultant to his own senatorial campaign, allowing special interests to pay for airline tickets for his daughter, receiving a canoe from a Coke bottler and — hilariously, if you're wont to laugh at the sheer small-town gauche greediness of it all — setting up a "wedding registry" at Target and Dillard's department stores so citizens could lavish the Huckabees with gifts as they renewed their marriage vows. The long list of desired goodies included twenty-four settings of Lenox "Holiday Nouveau" china, a KitchenAid mixer and a "Jack La Lanne power juicer." If you didn't want to pick out something yourself, the Huckabees were glad to take straight cash. "Message from the couple," the registry noted. "Target GiftCards are welcome."
