Brian Sabean: Blue Ward Cyclonaphant

From Baseball Prospectus:

Lost in Magowan’s retirement announcement was that Giants General Manager Brian Sabean said he thinks his team can contend in the NL West this season and does not plan to trade the many veterans that still dot the San Francisco roster.

It's almost like you can smell the crack.

Standings in the NL West as of right now:
NL West W L PCT GB L10 Streak
Arizona 27 16 .628 - 5-5 L1
Los Angeles 22 20 .524 4.5 4-6 W1
San Francisco 17 27 .386 10.5 3-7 L4
Colorado 16 27 .372 11 4-6 W1
San Diego 16 28 .364 12 4-6 L1

They're 7.5 back in the wildcard and behind ten teams, including the Nationals and not including the three front-runners. Oh, and they suck.

If Brian Sabean actually does this he should be arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced for life in front of a firing squad.

Sources with both teams told the Toronto Globe and Mail that discussions between the Giants and Jays are focusing on a one-for-one swap of Tim Lincecum and Alex Rios. The Jays would prefer Matt Cain, but it appears they'll accept Lincecum, leaving it up to the Giants to decide.

Alex Rios? He ain't bad but...Alex Rios?

they must know he's one of Decker's...

According to Tracy Ringolsby*, the Giants have "let it be known that Tim Lincecum, their No. 1 pick in 2006, can be had for a quality bat."

Hmmm, unless it's Miguel Cabrera, this would be an incredibly stupid thing to do. Of course, this is Brian Sabean* we're dealing with (see ridiculous Barry Zito signing), so anything possible. Cabrera might be too young for Sabean - maybe he could get Moises Alou back from the Mets? What's Willie McCovey up to (they have his cove right there in right field!). Meanwhile, he's considering bringing Omar Vizquel back for not one, but two years...

Hendry vs. Sabean: Idiot GM Smackdown!

Who really IS the biggest idiot GM?

The Marlins will be on the hook for just $333,333 of Armando Benitez's salary after acquiring him from the Giants on Thursday.
The Giants will pick up the remainder of the $5,076,666 he was due. That means they will have paid him about $21.17 million for 45 saves over the last three three years.
