the case against retractable roofs (why not rooves?) continues (cont'd)

Houston Texans considering Rice Stadium for next home game

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has discussed the possibility of his team playing at Rice Stadium if repairs to Reliant Stadium from hurricane Ike can't be made in time for its first home game on Oct. 5.

The stadium's retractable roof lost five pieces in the storm and officials said large pieces of debris had fallen into the stadium.

Though he has discussed playing at Rice, which is six kilometres from Reliant, McNair is... Wait wait wait wait wait... six what? Does the Associated Press think Texas is some far-flung backwater outpost of the al Qaeda caliphate? We measure distance in American miles here bud, as in one mile = 3520 cubits as God intended.

Thank you, George W. Bush. Without your dark and spectacular failures, we wouldn't be so ready to leap forward. Kudos!

Because America has, figuratively speaking, had its legs blown off at the knee. We have been hobbled and traumatized and numbed, our once indestructible ego ripped away, had our entire moral and ethical infrastructure blasted out from under us in the most bloody and irresponsible and ignoble way possible.

And the primary explosive that did it? A deadly and useless war. Wait, that's not quite right. It was the inept leaders and disastrous reasoning behind the war, the pathetic cadre of hawks and neocons and insular kill-'em-all demagogues in the Bush Administration who veered the nation so far off course we ended up in a bloody ditch just outside Purgatory, a place teeming with recession and torture and homophobia, Patriot Acts and surveillance and fear.

Well, at least it works...

Fung was just sitting at home, trying to watch him sum Lou Daaabs on the TV, but it kept getting interrupted. Sumthin about turnadas sweeping thru da sout suburbs, den da nort suburbs. Da cable box even sed EAS on it to emphasize da point. Had a sexy computerized woman's voice & everything. And looks like more of dese thunderstorms will be flying thru da area today. But I do know the EAS works. Even when watching a blowhard.

I'd ask Smiff to pray for us, but I'm not sure how he's doing after the last cloud showed up in San Diego. It also looks like K-Mad knew to get outta town, hmmm....

McBush's free ride (cont'd)

New Chapter - How the media has covered McCain since Free Ride went to press

Many may have forgotten by now that the Iowa contest was actually won by Mike Huckabee, but the media proclaimed McCain -- who came in fourth place, with 13 percent of the vote -- the actual winner. "A fantastic night for John McCain," said the Politico's Mike Allen. Tim Russert immediately booked McCain, and not Huckabee (or second-place finisher Mitt Romney, or third-place finisher Fred Thompson), to be the guest on that Sunday's Meet the Press. Matthews seemed to sum up the media's thoughts about the senator in a January 28 interview: "Senator McCain, you know you're in my heart."

"I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that. The newspaper carried the story in our local area that was not carried nationally that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina [sic] came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades. So I believe that the judgment of God is a very real thing."

why does God hate Tom Glavine?

“That’s what it takes,” Nationals manager Manny Acta said, when asked about seeing Glavine leave.

“It’s destiny. You can always go hard in whatever you want to do. The guy above,” Acta said, and paused, pointing skyward. “He’s got the last word.”

those wacky pastors (cont'd)

What About McCain's Pastor Problem?

In a September 2006 interview on National Public Radio, Hagee reaffirmed his view that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment against New Orleans for hosting a homosexual parade. Hagee has also said that the Jews brought the Holocaust upon themselves by "turning away from the true God." He referred to Catholicism as a "false cult," and said the religion contributed to Hitler's anti-semitic views. When Hagee endorsed him, McCain said he was "proud" to have the pastor's support.

Morgellons? Sounds like a Horror middle reliever

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California Division of Research launched a study to learn about an unexplained skin condition known as Morgellons. Persons who suffer from this condition report a range of symptoms including non-healing skin lesions associated with the emergence of fibers or solid material from the skin, abnormal skin sensations (such as stinging and biting or pins and needles) and non-cutaneous symptoms such as difficulty concentrating and short-term memory loss. Researchers hope to learn more about who might be affected, what symptoms they experience, and factors that may contribute to their illness...Interested persons are encouraged to visit the CDC’s Unexplained Dermopathy/Morgellons web site."

are we sure we know what our neighboring galaxies are up to?

News item: Jet From Supermassive Black Hole Seen Blasting Neighboring Galaxy

A jet of highly charged radiation from a supermassive black hole at the center of a distant galaxy is blasting another galaxy nearby -- an act of galactic violence that astronomers said yesterday they have never seen before.

An Act of God? It's da only way for S#i+ Blowing Up to win...

Like Mike Hackabee, Smiff has been talking to The Big Man...hoping for a plague of locusts to rain down upon Foxborough.
Alas, i will be on a train to Santa Barbara and can't watch the end times play out on the grid-iron...

ESPN reporter Wendi Nix reported that there is currently a "wintry mix" falling at Foxborough stadium and similar conditions should continue until gametime. Winds remain the main concern and are expected to continue. It started snowing in New England, but quickly changed to sleet and freezing rain. More than anything, wind would hurt Brady's chances of a big day. We would continue to monitor all the weather situations, but would only consider benching Brady for another top-5 quarterback option. The consequences of the weather is unknown.

Dis just in...

Wendi Nix of ESPN reports that the weather at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough "is an absolute mess." The tarp is still on the field less than two hours before kickoff between the Jets and Patriots. Snow and what The Weather Channel reports could be 35 MPH winds will lessen the Patriots' chances of putting up their usually explosive numbers offensively, and could specifically put a big hit on Tom Brady's fantasy value.

...Locusts! I Demand Thee!!

(I'm also seeing if God will smite Mike Shanahan and his "offensive" play calling...)

the smiting goes on unabated

Rest of Today... Occasional snow showers. New snow accumulation up to 1 inch. Highs around 30. North winds 10 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph early in the afternoon.

Skilling: More storms
Wednesday's storm is only the opening salvo of a very active weather pattern which could see at least three additional systems--two of them potentially prolific precipitation producers--over the coming week.

Ok then, but the real question is: Why Does God Hate Georgia?

Why is God smiting Georgia? Too much peach cobbler? Bobby Cox? The way Max Cleland was treated? I say, let 'em crash.

Georgia’s ‘unorthodox’ response to a drought
By: Steve Benen @ 5:17 AM - PST
Georgia is in the midst of an awful drought, so Gov. Sonny Perdue (R) has decided to, well,
just take a look.
What to do when the rain won’t come? If you’re Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, you pray. The governor will host a prayer service next week to ask for relief from the drought gripping the Southeast. “The only solution is rain, and the only place we get that is from a higher power,” Perdue spokesman Bert Brantley said on Wednesday.
It’s the 21st century. I just thought I’d mention that.
The governor’s rain-prayer service is scheduled for Tuesday outside the state Capitol. If
weather.com is right, they’ll have to move it inside — the forecast is for rain.

The fires ravaging San Diego County are expected to get much worse before they get better. "This fire will probably be the worst this county has ever seen – worse than the Cedar fire," Sheriff Bill Kolender said.

Pomerado Hospital is being evacuated
At least seven fires fueled by strong gusting winds burned structures and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents throughout the county. The Witch fire, pushed by strong Santa Ana winds, roars west Monday morning across Rancho Bernardo and Poway, destroying hundreds of structures and forcing thousands of people from their homes.
