Smiff: Ahead of the Curve

Once again. He got out while the gettin was, well, better than it's going to be...

Cook County's sales tax would more than triple, pushing Chicago's rate to 11 percent, under a proposal Board President Todd Stroger wants commissioners to consider next week.

Stroger is not sponsoring the tax increase.

It's also spelled S-t-r-o-g-e-r, for all the morons out there.

BTW, where the hell else can you find the money needed? Prisons and patients aren't free.

Ouch, well, if you're looking for accuracy, look elsewhere. Uh, how about putting less people in prison for drug possession? Just askin'...

Anonymous, apparently you don't know how to spell your own name and had to use the Blogger default, t'is such a shame.

I am also quite aware of how Todd's last name is spelled, however his nepotistic rise to power means he doesn't deserve the respect of having his name spelled correctly.

The fact that he's not sponsoring the tax increase doesn't mean that he doesn't support it. If you've ever paid any attention to politics in Cook County you know nothing comes up that isn't supported by the machine.

No prisons and patients aren't free. To find the money the county needs the first thing to do is reform the county's hiring and contracting practices. That won't close the budget hole, but it's a start. Then you fill in more of the gap with targeted cuts to the county budget instead of the assinine 17% accross the board cuts he forced earlier this year. Only after that do you start looking for new revenue.

Frankly the tax increase won't have much impact on me, I have a car and can easily drive to another county for purchases. Unfortunately many of the working poor don't have that option. But I imagine that since you support the Chicago Democratic Machine that you're really a closetted Republican and have know problem with balancing budgets on the backs of the poor.
