the suspense is killing Fungster

Apple hints at something new

... there is some speculation that it may introduce a new kind of device that is smaller than a laptop but larger than an iPhone. (A sammich? Ed.)

Smaller than a laptop but bigger than an iPhone = ultramobile PC. Or, I guess, in this case, ultramobile Mac. Which already exist on the PC end, as you can guess since they already have a name. People apparently want something that runs the full version of software and sized between a laptop (which is waaaaaaaaaaay too heavy at 5 pounds) and an iPhone (whose screen, while nice and all, is way too small to get work done on, not to mention you can't really type on it, despite what Sarge says).

So far, the PC versions have either had too many compromises, or cost too much. Not to mention they don't usually have a (current) laptop processor in them, meaning that performance suffers. If they're coming out with one of dese, it would actually be interesting to see what they would do. I wouldn't say Apple has been an innovator, what they do is take what's out there, and made the necessary tweaks make it (gulp) better. They didn't have the first mp3 player. They didn't have the first smartphone, in fact they were years behind. But nobody lines up for any of the other phones.

I know I've wanted an ultramobile, so if they can do a good job for a good price...nah.

It's odd that the biggest dinosaur in our group in regards to technology is the one who plays the most video games.

The iPhone is super easy to type on actually - obviously not as easy as a keyboard, but much easier than a blackberry or other cell phone.

Missing the point, as usual, Sarge. You can't type 40 wpm on an iPhone now can you? Even if you could, you'd probably get tired much faster than with a laptop. That's a major reason for wanting an ultramobile, and that's what I was comparing the iPhone to, not to other smartphones.

Of course, as it turns out, one of the big complaints with the current crop of ultramobiles is, gasp, the keyboard. They're usually not quite full size, so although you should be able to type with both hands, ymmv.
