Charles Krauthammer: A Douchebag of Liberty

Obama isn't close to earning his stripes

...has there ever been a presidential nominee with a wider gap between his estimation of himself and the sum total of his lifetime achievements?

Smiff's response at the soon-to-be slimmer, news-free Trib:
That would be the current president, a man I am sure Krauthammer voted for twice. Bush 43 had ZERO accomplishments as governor or in business, but that was good enough for Mr. Krauthammer in 2000 and 2004. Bush proceeded to become the worst president we've ever had, and it's not even close. While Obama might be inexperieced, he at least has something that Bush has never had: intellect and a brain. McCain does have this, but agrees with Bush on nearly every issue. Krauthammer wants more of that? How do morons like this still have nationally syndicated columns??

I don't think that Obama has done little.

And I don't think Democrats should give in to that clearly wrong headed argument.

1. Law Review Harvard - first black to hold that position. Impressive.

2. Strong community organizer who had a reputation for getting things done - he's actually worked in neighborhoods - seen "how the other half lived" - it's not some country club. Bush never understood that - and despite McCain's obviously heroic decisions while a prisoner in Vietnam, in America he's never been in those parts of the city either.

3. As an Illinois legislator he earned points from both sides of the aisle and pretty much everybody he ever worked with while crafting legislation that was not about winners and losers but workability. This might not please me all the time, or anybody all the time, but it's better by much than what we have now.

4. He won a Senate primary against a machine politician who had the support of everybody against him. He did it by offering a clear choice to voters and being able to communicate his message in a way that excited people.

5. Once in the Senate he quickly became known for his in depth knowledge of a spectrum of issues - this earned him respect on both sides of the aisle. When McCain got all puffy about some breach of Senate etiquette he felt Obama had made a few years ago, nobody else really came out to back him up, instead, on both sides of the aisle, it was Obama who was more broadly supported. This speaks some volumes. Again, he worked to craft workable legislation and has a consistent record of being rather progressive and liberal on issues.

6. While doing that he organized a campaign for president that has arguably been the most successful one, so far, since Kennedy's. He took on somebody who was practically an incumbent who had broad sympathy built into her run across the spectrum of Democrat voters - she also had reason to expect to out-fund raise Obama, but Hillary could not keep up with the juggernaut of fund raising and nuanced understanding of the populace and the race that Obama had working for him.

McCain basically won because the other choices in his primary were so obviously bad.

In the Democratic primaries, Hillary and Edwards were both excellent candidates who could have beaten McCain.

That's not nothing. That's a lot of something. Krauthammer is a douche.

I'm on record as not considering Krauthammer to be worth an actual rebuttal, because he does it to himself.
