Scientist: 'Arctic is screaming'

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An already relentless melting of the Arctic greatly accelerated this summer, a warning sign that some scientists worry could mean global warming has passed an ominous tipping point. One even speculated that summer sea ice would be gone in five years.

Yeah, but think of all the real estate opportunities that will come up when all the ice in Greenland melts. Not to mention all the new houses we'll have to build here for the new east and west coasts, which will be 40 miles inland. Gondolas on Broadway anyone?

Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

My elevator ride today was punctuated by an announcement that by 2050 all the coral in the sea will likely be wiped out. The blurb then noted that the total value of coral in the sea was estimated at $30 Billion US.

You know that a large number of people in that elevator are going to be thinking ... hmm the coral really isn't that valuable compared to the economic production of some large companies then.

I estimate the total value of human life as $1 (for coral).
