"To promise a withdrawal of our forces from Iraq, regardless of the calamitous consequences to the Iraqi people, our most vital interests, and the future of the Middle East, is the height of irresponsibility."

Is he a Chicken?
Keiichi Yabu’s status for Monday’s game is uncertain after he hurt his eyes when the elastic bands he was working out with Saturday became unhooked and snapped across his face. The blurred vision would be a bigger problem, but it prevents him from actually having to watch his team play. Giants fans everywhere will be trying to duplicate the effects by the end of the month.
K-Mad's Career Killer Corner (non-injury) (cont'd)
Travis(ty) Buck is 0-21 on the season, with no walks and nine strikeouts. He did knock in his first run of the year on a sac fly today. And he has a hit by pitch, so at least his OBP isn't .000. Udder dan dat, he should be approaching a record of futility to start a season.

Brett Myers SUCKED again today?
I am SHOCKED.
Brett Myers was charged with four runs in five innings of work in a loss to the Reds on Sunday. Three of the runs came on a two-run blast from Ken Griffey Jr. and a solo shot from Jeff Keppinger. Still, Myers wasn't very good as he gave up eight total hits and three walks while throwing just 59-of-95 pitches for strikes. Good Lord, he SUCKS.

K-Mad does it again...
First start of the year...HE GUONE.
Justin Duchscherer will undergo an MRI on his biceps Sunday.
The A's believe the injury is just a mild strain. If the MRI shows nothing, it's possible Duchscherer could make his next scheduled start Wednesday in Toronto. If he can't make that start, the A's will probably either pull Lenny DiNardo out of the bullpen to take his place or activate Chad Gaudin a couple days early. Gaudin (foot/hip) is slated to make his first start Saturday in Cleveland, but is eligible to come off the DL at any time.

Dear MoveOn member,
For all the coverage this week of Senator John McCain's background, there are some important things you won't learn about him from the TV networks. His carefully crafted positive image relies on people not knowing this stuff—and you might be surprised by some of it.
Please check out the list below, and then forward it to your friends, family, and coworkers. We can't rely on the media to tell folks about the real John McCain—but if we all pass this along, we can reach as many people as CNN Headline News does on a good night.
Click here to tell us how many people you can pass it on to—and to see our progress nationally:

10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don't):
1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he's continued to oppose key civil rights laws.
2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain "will make Cheney look like Gandhi."
3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.
4. McCain opposes a woman's right to choose. He said, "I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned."
5. The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.
6. He's one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.
7. Many of McCain's fellow Republican senators say he's too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He's erratic. He's hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."
8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.
9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion." McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult."
10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.
John McCain is not who the Washington press corps make him out to be. Please help get the word out—forward this email to your personal network. And if you want us to keep you posted on MoveOn's work to get the truth out about John McCain, sign up here:

Promote La Jolla’s previous attempts to deal with the problem include installing metal dividers on benches to split the seats, but this tactic was unsuccessful because the homeless simply “perfected sleeping upright,” Marengo said.

Original Schlitz coming back to Chicago
April 04, 2008
(Crain’s) — Schlitz, known as “the beer that made Milwaukee famous,” is bringing its original taste back to Chicago on Monday.
Woodridge-based Pabst Brewing Co. has recreated the original formula for the beer, which was a top seller nationwide in the 1970s before it was reformulated. The recreated beer will be sold in brown longneck bottles and labels noting the “Classic 1960s formula.”
“We are going after the baby boomers who remember Schlitz when they first started drinking,” says Jerry Glunz, the general manager of Lincolnwood-based Louis Glunz Beer Inc., which is distributing the beer in Chicago. “This is a different beer than the (current Schlitz line in the can), and this beer will stand up to its former glory.”
He says the beer will be available at about a dozen locations on the North Side of Chicago on Monday, the 75th anniversary of the end of Prohibition.
He says the locations will include: Schubas Tavern, Southport Lanes & Billiards, Cardinal Liquors, 1000 Liquors, Chicago Brauhaus, Sheffield’s Bar, the Long Room, Simon’s Tavern, Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, Glunz Bavarian Haus and the House of Glunz.
Pabst Brewmaster Bob Newman researched the old formula and interviewed previous brewmasters to find the correct recipe, Mr. Glunz says.
Mr. Glunz said the beer declined in popularity because of changes to the formula in the 1970s and a switch to cans in the 1990s.

For Little Children, Grown-Up Labels As Sexual Harassers
By Brigid Schulte
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, April 3, 2008; A01
In his seven years, Randy Castro has been an aspiring soccer player, an accomplished Lego architect and a Royal Ranger at his Pentecostal church. He also, according to his elementary school record, sexually harassed a first-grade classmate.
During recess at his Woodbridge school one day in November, when he was 6, he said, he smacked the classmate's bottom. The girl told the teacher. The teacher took Randy to the principal, who told him such behavior was inappropriate. School officials wrote an incident report calling it "Sexual Touching Against Student, Offensive," which will remain on his student record permanently.
Then, as Randy sat in the principal's office, they called the police.
"I thought they were going to take me to prison," Randy said recently. "I was scared."

Post-9/11 Memo Indicates View Around Constitution
For at least 16 months after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the Bush administration argued that the Constitution's protection against unreasonable searches and seizures on U.S. soil did not apply to its efforts to protect against terrorism.
That view was expressed in a secret Justice Department legal memo dated Oct. 23, 2001. The administration stressed yesterday that it now disavows that view.

I saw this story on da news dis morning:
A pair of hoax ads on Craigslist cost an Oregon man much of what he owned.
The ads popped up Saturday afternoon, saying the owner of a Jacksonville home was forced to leave the area suddenly and his belongings, including a horse, were free for the taking, said Jackson County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan.
But Robert Salisbury had no plans to leave. The independent contractor was at Emigrant Lake when he got a call from a woman who had stopped by his house to claim his horse.
On his way home he stopped a truck loaded down with his work ladders, lawn mower and weed eater.
"I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give the stuff back," Salisbury said. "They showed me the Craigslist printout and told me they had the right to do what they did.
"The driver sped away after rebuking Salisbury. On his way home he spotted other cars filled with his belongings.
Once home he was greeted by close to 30 people rummaging through his barn and front porch.
The trespassers, armed with printouts of the ad, tried to brush him off. "They honestly thought that because it appeared on the Internet it was true," Salisbury said. "It boggles the mind.
"Jacksonville police and Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrived but by then several cars packed with Salisbury's property had fled.
He turned some license plate numbers over to police.
Michelle Easley had seen the ad that claimed Salisbury's horse had been declared abandoned by the sheriff's department and was free to a good home.
"I can't stand to see a horse suffer so I drove out there and got her," Easley said. "The horse didn't look abandoned. She is in good shape for being 32 years old.
"But it looked odd, so she left a note on Salisbury's door explaining the ad. She then decided to call to make sure the ad was legitimate when the second similar ad appeared.
"I feel bad because I was a part of it," Easley said. "It felt right to call the police.
"Fagan praised Easley's honestly but said prosecution was likely for anybody caught with Salisbury's property.
Items can be returned with no questions asked, Fagan said.
Detectives have contacted Craigslist's legal team to try to trace the ad.
Meanwhile, Salisbury could not even relax on his porch swing.
Someone took it.
I can't find the update to the story, which is that them smart cookies decided to track down who had posted the listing. Led them to the real crooks, who had allegedly hit up the place first, got all the good stuff, then posted the Craigslist ad to have other people come in and cover up their crime. Actually, it's a really ingenious way of covering up a crime. Using a computer whose IP address can be traced back to you - stooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopid!

A woman bikes along Mission Bay, where bright blue skies rule the day. The storm that National Weather Service forecasters expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon has slowed and weakened and may not hit the county until after 10 p.m.“I don't think it has much chance of holding together,” forecaster Steve Vanderburg says. “There's a good chance it won't do a lot for us.”

Suppan?!, Kendall?!?! lead Brewers over Cubs 8-2 as Chicago loses 2nd straight
Preview Box Score Recap
CHICAGO (AP)—So much for the Chicago Cubs getting off to a fast start in their quest to win the World Series for the first time in 100 years. Jeff Suppan held Chicago to two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings, Rickie Weeks homered on the game’s first pitch and Jason Kendall reached base five straight times to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Cubs 8-2 Wednesday. Ryan Braun and ex-Cub Kendall—batting ninth—had three hits each in Milwaukee’s 14-hit attack. The Cubs were 8 1/2 games back of the Brewers in late June last season after a slow start before overtaking Milwaukee to win the NL Central. Chicago lost Monday’s opener 4-3 in 10 innings.
Suppan (1-0) gave up Derrek Lee’s home run leading off the fourth on a 41-degree day and left after allowing Geovany Soto’s (MONK!) home in the seventh. Salomon Torres relieved Suppan and, after consecutive one-out singles by Felix Pie and Mike Fontenot, retired Ryan Theriot on a flyout and struck out Alfonso Soriano—off to an 0-for-9 start. Chicago starter Ted Lilly (0-1) gave up four runs and five hits in 4 2-3 innings.
Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Braun doubled off Aramis Ramirez’s glove at third, Bill Hall had an RBI single and Corey Hart delivered an RBI double. Lee’s first homer got a run back for the Cubs in the bottom half but Milwaukee drove out Lilly in the fifth when Kendall doubled, and Lilly hit Prince Fielder in the side with a two-out pitch. Braun greeted Kevin Hart with an RBI single for a 4-1 lead. Fans at Wrigley Field started to boo* the Cubs in the sixth when Milwaukee scored without a hit thanks to two walks, three stolen bases and a Soto’s error.
Notes
Longtime Cubs’ clubhouse manager Yosh Kawano, who joined the team in 1943, two years before its last World Series appearance, is leaving the job. He will stay with team in another capacity and be honored at a ceremony later this season. Kawano turns 87 in June. Dis poor guy has probably seen more losses in the history of losing dan anybody...

News item: Mohamed ElBaradei, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), predicts that unless present trends are reversed, there will be more than 25 nuclear weapons states in a few years, many of them unstable and prone to takeover by extremists. The likelihood of the use of nuclear weapons would then be greater than at any time during the Cold War.

Heavy Troop Deployments Are Called Major Risk
Readiness Is Dangerously Low, Army Chief Says
By Ann Scott Tyson

Senior Army and Marine Corps leaders said yesterday that the increase of more than 30,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan has put unsustainable levels of stress on U.S. ground forces and has put their readiness to fight other conflicts at the lowest level in years.
In a stark assessment a week before Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, is to testify on the war's progress, Gen. Richard A. Cody, the Army's vice chief of staff, said that the heavy deployments are inflicting "incredible stress" on soldiers and families and that they pose "a significant risk" to the nation's all-volunteer military...
"I've never seen our lack of strategic depth be where it is today," said Cody, who has been the senior Army official in charge of operations and readiness for the past six years and plans to retire this summer (and hates America -- ed.).

K-Mad now affecting potassium levels...
Carlos Zambrano is expected to make his next start after leaving Monday's game with forearm cramps. "He's fine," manager Lou Piniella said. "His potassium level was a little low. I think that was the problem." Zambrano is scheduled to face the Astros on Sunday.

Cook County: the system works
County’s new lobbyist throwing fundraiser for Stroger
(Crain’s) — Just months after receiving a pair of six-figure, no-bid contracts, Cook County’s new Washington, D.C., lobbyist is hosting a fundraiser for the official who awarded him that work: County Board President Todd Stroger.
Lobbyist Richard Boykin is holding the fundraiser for Mr. Stroger on Thursday evening at the Loop offices of Mr. Boykin’s law firm, Barnes & Thornburg LLP. Invitations for the event request donations of $250 to as much as $2,500...
Mr. Boykin says there is "no connection" between the contracts and the upcoming fundraiser, which will pull in a reported $30,000 or so for Mr. Stroger’s political campaign fund.
Mr. Stroger’s spokesman says only that Mr. Boykin "can throw a fundraiser for whoever he wants..."
Crain’s first asked Mr. Stroger’s office for comment on this matter Tuesday afternoon. By mid-afternoon Wednesday, the president’s spokesman said he had not yet been able to reach the appropriate county officials to confirm that Messrs. Boykin and Burkhardt had been granted a second contract.
The spokesman added that he was aware of Thursday’s fundraiser but was not prepared to further discuss the matter.

KOREA FLIP FLOP: Although McCain is now fond of using South Korea as a model for the Iraq occupation, he had rejected such a framework as recently as last November. At that time, PBS host Charlie Rose asked the senator whether he thought "South Korea is an analogy of where Iraq might be...over the next, say, 20, 25 years," to which McCain replied, "I don't think so." Rose followed, "Even if there are no casualties?" McCain repeated "no," adding that because of "the religious aspects of it [Iraq] that America eventually withdraws." Just two months later, however, McCain emphasized that as long as there are no casualties, he wouldn't mind staying in Iraq for "one hundred years, one thousand years, ten thousand years or until the earth collapses under global climate change." McCain is now fully embracing the Korea model, remarking just yesterday, "We fought a war with Japan and Germany. Afterwards we maintained a military presence there, which we are doing today. We fought a war in Korea, we maintained a military presence in Korea, which we are doing to this day. The first Gulf War, we threw Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait, and we have a military presence there to this day." But as McCain himself seemed to recognize just a few months ago when talking to Rose, sectarian Iraq presents a very different situation than relatively ethnically- and religiously-homogeneous South Korea or Kuwait.

Decker betrothed?
Andy Roddick won at love – he is engaged to swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker.
The 25-year-old tennis star met Decker in New York last year and proposed to him in early March, his Web site said yesterday.
“With their hectic travel schedules, Andy and Brooklyn plan to enjoy their engagement and will wait to set a wedding date,” the site said.
Roddick is ranked No. 6 on the ATP Tour and is competing in the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. Decker has appeared in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and is a New York City school teacher.
I haven't seen Decker in a while, but either he has had significant "work done," or Sports Illustrated airbrush the shit out of their photos. (And they must have caught him on a Monday, aka "shaving day.") And couldn't he have done better than a "never reached his potential" like Roddick for, say, Smiff? Brooklyn, call me!

The case for U.S. disengagement from combat is compelling in its own right. But it must be matched by a comprehensive political and diplomatic effort to mitigate the destabilizing regional consequences of a war that the outgoing Bush administration started deliberately, justified demagogically and waged badly...
In brief, the war has become a national tragedy, an economic catastrophe, a regional disaster and a global boomerang for the United States. Ending it is thus in the highest national interest.

Katrina Victims May Have to Repay Money
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Imagine that your home was reduced to mold and wood framing by Hurricane Katrina. Desperate for money to rebuild, you engage in a frustrating bureaucratic process, and after months of living in a government-provided trailer tainted with formaldehyde you finally win a federal grant.
Then a collector calls with the staggering news that you have to pay back thousands of dollars.
Thousands of Katrina victims may be in that situation.
A private contractor under investigation for the compensation it received to run the Road Home grant program for Katrina victims says that in the rush to deliver aid to homeowners in need some people got too much. Now it wants to hire a separate company to collect millions in grant overpayments.
The contractor, ICF International of Fairfax, Va., revealed the extent of the overpayments when it issued a March 11 request for bids from companies willing to handle ''approximately 1,000 to 5,000 cases that will necessitate collection effort.''
The bid invitation said: ''The average amount to be collected is estimated to be approximately $35,000, but in some cases may be as high as $100,000 to $150,000.''
The biggest grant amount allowed by the Road Home program is $150,000, so ICF believes it paid some recipients the maximum when they should not have received a penny. If ICF's highest estimate of 5,000 collection cases -- overpaid by an average of $35,000 -- proves to be true, that means applicants will have to pay back a total of $175 million.
One-third of qualified applicants for Road Home help had yet to receive any rebuilding check as of this past week. The program, which has come to symbolize the lurching Katrina recovery effort, is financed by $11 billion in federal funds.
ICF spokeswoman Gentry Brann said in an e-mail Friday that the overpayments are the inevitable result of the Road Home grant being recalculated to account for insurance money and government aid given to Katrina victims.
Brann said there was a sense of urgency in paying Road Home applicants, and ICF and the state knew applicants would have to return some money.
''The choice was either to process grants immediately or wait until the March 2008 deadline (for submitting Road Home applications) before disbursing any funds,'' Brann said in her e-mail.
Brann pointed out that 5,000 collections cases would represent a 4-percent error rate for the Road Home that is ''quite good for large federal programs.''
Frank Silvestri, co-chair of the Citizen's Road Home Action Team, a group that formed out of frustrations with ICF, sees it far differently.
''They want people to pay for their incompetence and their mistakes. What they need to be is aggressive about finding the underpayments,'' he said. ''People relied, to their detriment, on their (ICFs) expertise and rebuilt their houses and now they want to squeeze this money back out of them.''
The prospect of Road Home grant collections comes less than two weeks after the Louisiana inspector general and the legislative auditor said they were investigating why former Gov. Kathleen Blanco paid ICF an extra $156 million in her waning days in office to administer the program. With the increase, ICF stands to earn $912 million to run Road Home, a contract that also sweetened its initial public stock offering, and helped it buy out four other companies. It now reaches into government contracting sectors that include national defense and the environment.
Paul Rainwater, executive director of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, the state body that asked for the Blanco-ICF investigations, acknowledged the collections could be painful for applicants, many of whom have used up their nest eggs to rebuild.
''The state must walk a fine line of treating homeowners who have been overpaid with fairness and compassion and ensuring that all federal funds are used for their intended purpose,'' said Rainwater, an appointee of new Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Upon receiving money from Road Home, grantees sign a batch of forms, including one that says they must refund any overpayments.
Melanie Ehrlich, co-chair of Citizen's Road Home Action Team, which has documented Road Home cases that appear littered with mistakes, said she had no confidence that ICF had correctly calculated overpayments. She charged that the company was more likely using collections as retribution against people who had appealed their award amounts in effort to get the aid they deserved.
''I think they are looking for ways to decrease awards and that's part of dissuading people,'' she said.
Brann said applicants are told an appeal could boost or diminish their award. She called Ehrlich's charge ''a totally unfounded assertion.''

Biggest Surprises
Rich Harden, healthy, has one of the best seasons on a bad team ever. But his bad team/great pitching is shadowed by the as good pitching of Cain and Lincecum who have a combined 21-27 record with a 3.45 e.r.a. and 345 innings pitched//360 k's. In the year of bad team//good pitcher, Zach Greinke, Ian Snell and Shawn Hill will also put up great periphials. As a unit, all these pitchers will go something like 62-80 with a 3.70 e.r.a. and 1030 innings pitched//980 strikeouts.
The Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays will compete for a playoff spot into mid-August if Kazmir is healthy relatively soon.
Daric Barton will break out hard-core.
Biggest Questions
To what extent will Felix Pie develop this year?
How healthy is John Lackey? If he's worse than they're saying, Seattle will be right there.
Where will Barry end up (if anywhere)?
Will the Twins get smart about Joe Mauer and at least have him play a Victor Martinez kind of role - dh'ing, maybe playing a little 3B and catching 4 games a week?
To what extent will Joba and Hughes be allowed to develop into front-line starters this year? Will Ian Kennedy kill the Joba-star? Is this allowable?
Will Alex Gordon become a beast?
What will the Mets rotation look like in mid-August? If there's some injuries, Atlanta and Philadelphia get back in the middle of things real quick.
Minor League Break-outs:

Joe Savery - Phi Phillies - Starting Pitcher
Josh Vitters - Chicago Cubs - 3B

This should make Smiff happy
The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Adam Eaton may have pitched himself out of the No. 5 spot in the Phillies rotation.
Eaton allowed six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings on Thursday to raise his spring ERA to 7.41, and manager Charlie Manuel didn't exactly commit to using him. "I don't know... We'll see when we get there. We've got plenty of time. [Next] Saturday's a long way off. Hell, I might be dead by then," Manuel said. The Phillies could turn to Chad Durbin, who has a 5.25 ERA this spring, in his place.

Stories you may be interested in based on past browsing
People who choose to eat 'Dumpster' food
Kids train to be ultimate fighters
Female author writes about her own male past
Never go against the family
Da story he was reading at dat time: Mom goes from $70K to food bank.
I haven't read any of those stories, but I wonder - did they actually study my browsing habits and choose those, or are they just pulling my leg and putting up stories noone else reads? Or is Fung so Bushian he must be told what to read?

McCain: Create league of democracies
McCain said he favors creation of a world organization he calls a "League of Democracies" that would work to put political, economic and possibly military pressure on countries considered undemocratic. Such an organization could move in ways the UN can't because of resistance from Russia and China, among others.
OK, so he wants to bring together a bunch of countries of his choosing so they can invade the countries that are not like us and make them like us so they can join us and invade the countries that are not like us. But we already have the UN? Well, they don't work fast enuff and we gave undemocratic nations too much power so we need a new group. That we get to pick. Well then use NATO. That group's been looking for a purpose for almost 20 years.

What About McCain's Pastor Problem?
In a September 2006 interview on National Public Radio, Hagee reaffirmed his view that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment against New Orleans for hosting a homosexual parade. Hagee has also said that the Jews brought the Holocaust upon themselves by "turning away from the true God." He referred to Catholicism as a "false cult," and said the religion contributed to Hitler's anti-semitic views. When Hagee endorsed him, McCain said he was "proud" to have the pastor's support.

Western Antarctic ice chunk collapses
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer
A chunk of Antarctic ice about seven times the size of Manhattan suddenly collapsed, putting an even greater portion of glacial ice at risk, scientists said Tuesday.
Satellite images show the runaway disintegration of a 160-square-mile chunk in western Antarctica, which started Feb. 28. It was the edge of the Wilkins ice shelf and has been there for hundreds, maybe 1,500 years.
This is the result of global warming, said British Antarctic Survey scientist David Vaughan.
Because scientists noticed satellite images within hours, they diverted satellite cameras and even flew an airplane over the ongoing collapse for rare pictures and video.
"It's an event we don't get to see very often," said Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. "The cracks fill with water and slice off and topple... That gets to be a runaway situation."
While icebergs naturally break away from the mainland, collapses like this are unusual but are happening more frequently in recent decades, Vaughan said. The collapse is similar to what happens to hardened glass when it is smashed with a hammer, he said.
The rest of the Wilkins ice shelf, which is about the size of Connecticut, is holding on by a narrow beam of thin ice. Scientists worry that it too may collapse. Larger, more dramatic ice collapses occurred in 2002 and 1995.
Vaughan had predicted the Wilkins shelf would collapse about 15 years from now. The part that recently gave way makes up about 4 percent of the overall shelf, but it's an important part that can trigger further collapse.
There's still a chance the rest of the ice shelf will survive until next year because this is the end of the Antarctic summer and colder weather is setting in, Vaughan said.
Scientists said they are not concerned about a rise in sea level from the latest event, but say it's a sign of worsening global warming.
Such occurrences are "more indicative of a tipping point or trigger in the climate system," said Sarah Das, a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
"These are things that are not re-forming," Das said. "So once they're gone, they're gone."
Climate in Antarctica is complicated and more isolated from the rest of the world.
Much of the continent is not warming and some parts are even cooling, Vaughan said. However, the western peninsula, which includes the Wilkins ice shelf, juts out into the ocean and is warming. This is the part of the continent where scientists are most concern about ice-melt triggering sea level rise.

Most Republicans Think the U.S. Health Care System is the Best in the World. Democrats Disagree
Source: Harvard School of Public Health
A recent survey by the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Harris Interactive, as part of their ongoing series, Debating Health: Election 2008, finds that Americans are generally split on the issue of whether the United States has the best health care system in the world (45% believe the U.S. has the best system; 39% believe other countries have better systems; 15% don’t know or refused to answer) and that there is a significant divide along party lines. Nearly seven-in-ten Republicans (68%) believe the U.S. health care system is the best in the world, compared to just three in ten (32%) Democrats and four in ten (40%) Independents who feel the same way.

And do we really expect the TSA staff to actually note which state your ID is from, then remember whether those are acceptable or not? Apparently security lines are moving way too fast, we need to slow them down to show vigilance, or something.

News item: Under Bush, endangered species list dying off
With little- noticed procedural and policy moves over several years, Bush administration officials have made it substantially more difficult to designate domestic animals and plants for protection under the Endangered Species Act.
As a result, listings plummeted. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne has not declared a single native species as threatened or endangered since he was appointed nearly two years ago.
Some species have vanished. The Lake Sammamish kokanee, a landlocked sockeye salmon, went extinct in 2001 after being denied an emergency listing, and genetically pure Columbia Basin pygmy rabbits disappeared last year after Interior declined to protect critical habitat for the species.
Not even animals are safe from the Wrath of W.

Another Milestone Reached
BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers in Baghdad on Sunday, the military said, pushing the overall American death toll in the five-year war to at least 4,000. The grim milestone came on a day when at least 61 people were killed across the country....
