Can we put this one in the Win column?

News Headline: "Bush says Iraq war is about al-Qaida."

News Headline: "U.S. believes surge has defeated al-Qaida in Iraq."

Of course:

1) al-Qaida wasn't in Iraq before we invaded.

2) Two percent of the violence in Iraq is created by al-Qaida.

If the Decider decides it's a win, it's a win, of course, of course.

Wait, so you're saying we've won 2% of the war?

That's awesome.

We've won that 2% right?

Oh right, of course, of course.

Where'd you get your 2% figure from?

Does someone doubt da Smiff? Well, i heard it on Olbermann last night. I don't remember if he mentioned a source, but it appears to be the terrorist-loving Congressional Research Service. And it's actually "less than two percent." Totally ripped from Wikipedia:

In 2006 the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research estimated that AQI’s membership was in a range of "more than 1,000," putting AQI’s forces at less than 1 percent of the insurgency. In 2007 the State Department dropped its base-level estimate, because, as an official explained, "the information is too disparate to come up with a consensus number".

In March 2007 the U.S.-sponsored Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty analyzed al-Qaeda in Iraq attacks for that month. Al-Qaeda in Iraq had taken credit for 43 out of 439 attacks on Iraqi security forces and Shiite militias, and 17 out of 357 attacks on U.S. troops.

According to both the July 2007 National Intelligence Estimate and the military intelligence report AQI accounted for 15 percent of attacks in Iraq. In its September 2007 report the Congressional Research Service notes that attacks from al-Qaeda are less than two percent of the violence in Iraq and criticized the administration’s statistics, noting that its false reporting of insurgency attacks as AQI attacks has increased since the “surge” began.[20][21]

So what you're saying is we weren't fighting the terrorists over there so we wouldn't have to fight them over here because the terrorists weren't over there? So that was all propaganda? We're actually fighting over there to get access to Iraqi oil as called for in the PNAC document from the late '90's? Shocking.

If there's anything you should have learned about what you hear on TV, it's to not trust what you hear on TV. On the wiki, they have the space to give a reference which you could check if you wanted to. The also tell you when they need a reference. On TV, you don't have time for that, so you just spew whatever stat you want and before you know it everyone's quoting it without checking it.

I also kinda wonder how you figure out what's what. I mean, they're already having problems because of how they define sectarian deaths vs regular old fashioned murders. See the NY Times I believe for that one.
