News item: The number of civilians inadvertently killed by U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan doubled in 2007 from the previous year as coalition forces dropped about a million pounds of bombs on the country, military analysts said.

As Bush's attention shifted more to Iraq, the annual increases in the poppy harvest in Afghansitan have paralleled the resurgence there of the Taliban. The poppy harvest in 2005 was a record breaker, beating the previous record from 1999 by more than 30 percent. Mario Costa, the executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said, "It is indeed very bad. You can say it is out of control."

Of course, the previous record was set at a time we were giving the Taliban millions of dollars to "fight the drug war."

When we said fighting the drug war they heard destroy the infidel. That's an understandable mix up.
