anudder Smiff success story

Hakim Warrick* had 23 points and eight rebounds on 11-of-17 shooting in a second consecutive start for the Grizzlies on Wednesday. That's two solid lines in a row, and while we don't trust coach Marc Iavaroni, Warrick should be picked up in most formats. Then just hope he keeps it going after the break.
*I've actually heard of him since he was a Syracuse Orange.

Shocker

Blackhawks win! Score 7 goals! One guy had a hattrick! Chicago is going nuts, I think I heard the air raid sirens go off. I'd link to the recap, but The Daily Show is coming up...

sKILLy's forecast

So sKILLy's going thru the forecast for this weekend, and apparently things are not very certain (duh). We're supposed to get really cold weather Sunday, but the question is whether we'll get more snow. sKILLy says the European, Canadian and Japanese computer models have us buried in snow, while the WGN and the Navy models have the snow staying south of the Chicagoland area. So, let's watch this weekend and see who's right, the forners or the good ol' USA.

what a flip-flop: McCain NOW FOR torture

Just pathetic... and this may lead one to ask: what did McCain give up to the Viet Cong as a result of torture? Must have worked, huh?

Who’s Your Maverick? John McCain Votes In Favor Of Torture

The Senate voted today to ban the CIA from using torture on suspected terrorists and the most famous POW in the Senate voted against the bill. The Maverick is now most assuredly dead and the betrayal is complete. The blogosphere was all over this issue, and thankfully the measure passed, but for McCain, it was a show of pure cowardice. In other words, the Senator who himself was tortured for years and has previously spoken out against it, voted to allow the use of torture on others to save his political hide and pander to a party base that despises him. Shame on you, Senator. Is this the sort of weakness you want from your Commander in Chief?

Tell me again how this no jobs, more wars, pro-torture, pro-Bush tax cuts, anti-choice, pro-surge Republican is going to draw Independents and Democrats to his side this fall? As a side note, would it surprise you that alleged Democratic caucus members Senators Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman also voted for torture today?

Brown Line work to mean slower trains into Loop
Southbound service to be limited to one track at Belmont, Fullerton as of March 30
Will the living envy the dead?

Brown, Red and Purple Line riders will see a faster commute out of downtown but a slower one heading into the Loop beginning March 30... On March 30, the CTA plans to reopen another northbound track at the Belmont Avenue station. Currently, the Brown, Purple and Red Line trains share one track, which creates congestion as trains take turns accessing the station... At the same time, southbound service on those lines will be restricted to one track at the Belmont and Fullerton Avenue stations until June 30, 2009, or the onset of the end times, whichever comes later, as work begins on expanding those platforms and reconfiguring tracks.

"Unfortunately, it means that during construction, passengers will see longer commute times because trains (will be backed up during rush hours)," said CTA President Ron Huberman, who presented the changes Wednesday during the agency’s monthly board meeting.

The CTA will attempt to run a train every two minutes to help combat the congestion... (wait a minute... won't that make things more congested? ed.)

Bush Thinks McCain Can Defend President's Legacy

Hard to pick a favorite line here.

The rezzz-i-dunce has become convinced that McCain will be an effective and strong defender of the Bush legacy in the general election campaign this fall, White House advisers tell U.S. News...

Bush believes that over the past seven years, his politics have strengthened the country, especially his moves to cut taxes, fight tarrrrism, and insist on victory in the Iraq war. Bush believes McCain is loyal to those goals and will strongly defend Bush if McCain proceeds to lock up the Republican presidential nomination, as expected.

"I know him well," Bush said. (Has he looked within his soul? ed.) "I know his convictions..."

As if things weren't bad enough already...

Clemens struggles under questioning

Clemens pressed by Congress, denies accusations by Pettitte, McNamee

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Roger Clemens struggled to find the right words under questioning during a congressional hearing Wednesday and denied new accounts of drug use made against him by former teammate and close friend Andy Pettitte.

Using words like "misremembered" and mispronouncing the last name of his chief accuser, Brian McNamee, Clemens rambled and stumbled during his early remarks on Capitol Hill.

Clemens' reputation and legacy were on the line, and there was the possibility that criminal charges could follow after the seven-time Cy Young winner testified.

"I have never taken steroids or HGH," Clemens said, his voice rising. "No matter what we discuss here today, I am never going to have my name restored."

She just sounded so obnoxious...

So I googled the spokesperson for the McCain campaign, Jill Hazlebaker and found this little oldie but goodie from mydd.com:

Kean-employed Liar Jill Hazelbaker Busted in the New York Times

by Matt Stoller, Thu Sep 21, 2006 at 01:07:04 AM EST

Republicans seem to be learning bad lessons from Dan Gerstein and Lee Siegel about lying and sockpuppetry.

The Internet postings came from people calling themselves "cleanupnj," "usedtobeblue" and "AmadeusNJ." They said they were concerned Democrats, "lifelong liberals," and they were troubled by the United States senator from New Jersey, Robert Menendez.

Mr. Menendez, they said, was up to no good. For instance, did you notice that a Congressional lawyer who Mr. Menendez said cleared him of ethics issues regarding a controversial real estate deal died last year? Wasn't there something fishy about that?

But the liberal Democratic hosts of BlueJersey.com, the Web log where such comments were posted, smelled something fishy about the postings, and said they traced them to a computer inside the campaign headquarters of Mr. Menendez's Republican opponent, Thomas H. Kean Jr.

They suspect the person behind the postings, which have appeared on the site regularly since July, is Mr. Kean's campaign spokeswoman, Jill Hazelbaker. Ms. Hazelbaker called the accusations "nonsense," and said neither she nor anyone else she knows of in the office had anything to do with the postings. "I've never e-mailed them nor posted on the Web site," she said on Wednesday. "It's a blog. You can't believe what's posted on blogs." She declined to make Mr. Kean available to discuss the matter.

The Kean campaign's technical adviser said that the Internet protocol, or I.P., address that linked the posts to the Kean headquarters was an old one, "from over a month ago." But an e-mail message Ms. Hazelbaker sent to a reporter on Wednesday shares the same I.P. address.

Hazelbaker simply lied to reporters, and Juan Melli of Bluejersey and official rabid lamb leader of New Jersey busted her (check out the funny comments by Scott Shields and Matt Miller). I'm not worried about the New Jersey race poll numbers - most people in New Jersey probably don't know that it's Tom Kean Jr. running rather than Tom Kean Sr yet, but they will in a few weeks.

Blogs like Bluejersey and Colorado Confidential provide an essential platform for progressives to achieve power. I have no idea why Tom Kean's spokesperson is posting on Bluejersey and lying about it to New York Times reporters. She's probably just sort of stupid and arrogant. But it's good that Hazelbaker getting busted flat-out now when it doesn't matter, so that journalists will know to double-check her nonsense when the campaign really heats up in November.

"And we're all watching golf!"

Drunk threatened city with TV remote
Thu Feb 7, 2008 9:27am EST

CANBERRA (Reuters) - A drunken man's threat to blow up half a city with his television remote control forced Australian police to declare a state of emergency at a luxury golf resort, a local court heard Thursday.

Geoffrey Martin Fryatt, 57, a resident of the Fairways Golf and Lifestyle Retreat in Brisbane, was arrested by elite paramilitary police after terrifying neighbors with a knife and threatening to detonate a store of chemicals with the TV remote.

"One push of the button will blow up half of Brisbane," Fryatt shouted in the standoff last May before police in the Queensland state capital opened fire with rubber bullets.

Fryatt's lawyer told the Brisbane District Court that his client lost control after losing much of his life savings in a fraud carried out by his finance broker, local media said.

"People are genuinely scared of sudden explosions," the judge said, sentencing Fryatt to a year's probation. "Frightening members of the public with threats of bombs and bomb hoaxes has a much greater impact than it once did," she said.

Fryatt accepted probation, but said he was concerned it could interrupt plans to travel overseas to do humanitarian aid work, the Brisbane Times newspaper reported.

"Let's get you right before we send you off to a third world country," the judge said.

Just wondering if Curt and the other McCain supporters (like ajd24) here will be volunteering for the military to fight the other wars McCain is promising, along with a 100 year commitment to staying in Iraq. Bush has decimated our military (where will McCain be getting all of the troops he will need for Iran and so forth?), so can we count on you to join up?

And Obama has said he will be committed to finding bin Laden (remember him?), you know, the head terrorist guy…

LOLObama

Romney: Quitter

The one ad he kept running out here was about how different he is from Hillary Clinton (maybe that's why she did so well here?). Willard seemed to be running his campaign in reverse - it was if he had already won the Republican nomination and was running against Hillary, who had won the Democratic nomination. I know that for many conservatives, just saying "Hillary Clinton" causes them to grow horns and a third eyeball, but MITT YOU WEREN'T RUNNING AGAINST HER. How about running some ads about McCain being a flip-flopper instead of a "straight talker". Or that fact that he said he doesn't know anything about the economy. Or the fact that he cozies upto and makes deals with pinko commies like Feingold and Ed Kennedy. Nope, he stuck with how "Hillary-care" was going to send everyone to the grave. What a maroon. And this guy made millions as a bidnessman? It must not be very hard then.

Oh, and this is priceless...

Romney at today's CPAC Wingnut Conference: ”If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.”

LoC influences the Beeb?

After the Fungster's complaint, they changed the story. It now reads:

He could be living up to his name, Simba, which means lion in Swahili - spoken across East Africa - and means strength in Shona, one of Zimbabwe's main indigenous languages.

Course, this does not satisfy the Fungster. He's still going with Swahili shouldn't have been mentioned, and at the very least least the Shona translation should have been first. So one must keep fighting...

For 2005, George W. and Laura Bush reported income of $738,880, paying $187,854 in taxes--about $26,000 less than they would have paid before the tax cuts he initiated. That same year, Dick and Lynne Cheney reported income of $9,120,960, paying taxes of $517,287, saving about $1,100,000 because of the tax cuts. Part of the savings was from charitable contributions he made that, due to a law designed to benefit Katrina victims, qualified for deduction from his income. None of contribitions went to hurricane victimes.

Well, first of all, probably not, but it's OK to ask the question, so we know whether to bother following developments or not. What got me riled up was the following:

"He could be living up to his name, Simba, which means lion in Swahili."

And how many people speak Swahili in Zimbabwe? Er, somewhere close to ZERO. I'm guessing he was given a Shona name, and not a Swahili one (I have been wrong before). In any case, he lives in Zimbabwe so the Shona translation would probably be more apt, instead of the one African language everyone knows, and just happens to have the same word, as luck would have it.

What is the Shona translation, you ask? Strength. It would have worked just fine in the article.

According to a survey carried out in Britain, many believe that Mahatma Gandhi and Churchill are just mythical figures like Florence Nightingale, popularly known as the 'Lady with the Lamp'.

In fact, almost a quarter of the population have the popular notion that Churchill, "the greatest Briton of all time", was made up.

Moreover, despite his celebrated military reputation, 47 per cent of respondents feel the 12th-century English King Richard the Lionheart is fictional, according to the survey of 3,000 British teens.

In contrast, a number of fictitious characters like Sherlock Holmes, King Arthur and Eleanor Rigby were given real life status.

While almost 65 per cent of respondents believe that mythical figure King Arthur existed and led a round table of knights at Camelot, 58 per cent of teens think that Holmes really lived at 221B Baker Street.

Fifty-one per cent of respondents believed that Robin Hood lived in Sherwood Forest, robbing the rich to give to the poor, while 47 per cent believed Eleanor Rigby was a real person rather than a creation of The Beatles.

The poll also revealed that nearly three quarters of those surveyed did not read history books while and 61 per cent admitted that they changed channels rather than watching historical programmes on television.

"While there's no excuse for demoting real historical figures such as Churchill, the elevation of mythical figures to real life showed the impact good films could have in shaping the public consciousness.

"Stories like Robin Hood are so inspiring that it's not surprising people like to believe these characters truly existed," the British media quoted Paul Moreton, the Head of UKTV Gold channel, which commissioned the poll, as saying.

Bobby Knight resigns

eternal vigilance, Bush style

News item: ...an unnamed CIA briefer flew to Bush's Texas ranch to call the president's attention personally to the now-famous Aug. 6, 2001, memo titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S." According to Suskind, Bush heard the briefer out and replied: "All right. You've covered your ass, now."

McCain Donated To Schilling Charity After Endorsement

"If John McCain personally believed in Curt Schilling's charity it is one thing. It is another to ask people to give money to his candidacy and have it go to Curt Schilling's charity. The only way that makes sense is that he is paying for the endorsement, although they are apparently long time friends."

The New England Patriots.

Frauds.

I told you they would lose - just like I've been tellin' ya all year. And it all started with that game they should have lost against the Eagles and A.J. Feeley.

Tom Brady (pretty boy): can't win the big one. But hey, he was a 2nd stringer at Michigan.

Belichick: Loser. I guess the NFL wouldn't allow him to get a camera in the Giants huddle. Also, really classy leaving the field with 2 seconds to play.

Add NFL dynasties to the list of things that aren't what they used to be...

I suppose the steam coming off this puddle of goo is also caused by global warming

News item: The persistent and dramatic decline in the snowpack of many mountains in the West is caused primarily by human-induced global warming and is not the result of natural variability in weather patterns, researchers reported yesterday.

Using data collected over the past 50 years, the scientists confirmed that the mountains are getting more rain and less snow, that the snowpack is breaking up faster and that more rivers are running dry by summer.

The study, published online yesterday by the journal Science, looked at possible causes of the changes -- including natural variability in temperatures and precipitation, volcanic activity around the globe and climate change driven by the release of greenhouse gases. The researchers' computer models showed that climate change is clearly the explanation that best fits the data.

Have you heard Wal-Mart's minimum wage in Mexico? $0 per hour.

Right now, 19,000 teens aged 14 to 16 work as grocery baggers at Wal-Mart stores in Mexico. These teenagers wear Wal-Mart uniforms and service Wal-Mart customers, but Wal-Mart doesn't pay them.

In order to sidestep international labor laws, Wal-Mart calls them "volunteers," and forces them to work only for tips.

LSD has SUUUCKED this whole month, and now this...

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Chicago area starting at 6 p.m., predicting that up to 7 inches of snow could fall by Friday morning.

A storm from the Southern Plains will begin moving into the Chicago area Thursday afternoon with snow flurries that are expected to intensify in the evening and overnight, meteorologist Stephen Rodriguez said.

The storm warming is in effect until 6 p.m. Friday for Cook, DuPage and Will Counties and other counties to the south. A snow advisory is in effect for northern counties, including McHenry, Lake and Kane.

Temperatures will remain in the upper 20s throughout the Thursday and drop into the lower 20s Thursday evening. Windchill factors and high winds will not be a concern, Rodriguez said.

Farther south, near Morris and Pontiac, up to a foot of snow is expected.

Obama Is Latest To Receive Dated Pop-Cultural Endorsement

In a move that's sure to provide a boost to Obama's fortunes among time-travelling high school kids from the early 1980s, Hulk Hogan - professional wrestler and reality teevee divorcee - has backed the Illinois Senator on the the Jimmy Kimmel show. Hogan, in picking Obama, cited something about "cards" and how Obama doesn't judge people based upon "the way people dress," which makes sense, considering Hogan offered his support whilst clad in a shimmery piece of yellow Saran Wrap that looked like it was stolen off the set of Miami Vice.

Have you wondered how the Twins screwed this up?

The Twins traded P Johan Santana to the Mets for OF Carlos Gomez, P Phil Humber and minor league Ps Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.

Instead of deals that would have netted Philip Hughes and Melky Cabrera or Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester, the Twins waited and ended up with this collection of nobodies, never-wuzzes and never-willbes. Really, take a look at Gomez's minor league record. It SUCKS. Guerra is 18 - chances he does anything in the majors? Think Dennis Kucinich. Humber: draft bust. And a Kevin? Can't trust 'em.

So who's to blame for this? The Twins GM is named Bill Smith. Nice going, Smiff.
