sKILLy xplains da wishy washiness

Dear Tom,
What does a 30 percent chance of rain mean?
-Magee Amethyst

Dear Magee,

The percent chance (or probability) of rain is the forecaster's way of expressing how certain he is that it will rain. Ideally, a forecaster wouldprefer to issue a zero-percent forecast (it absolutely will not rain) or a 100-percent forecast (it absolutely will rain), but the present "state of the art" does not give forecasters that ability.

The proper interpretation of a 30 percent chance of rain (assuming the forecasts verify perfectly) is that you will have rain on your head three out of ten times that you hear such a forecast.

Please note that the percent chance of rain does not address the duration of rainfall (it might rain all day or only a few minutes) or the amount of rainthat comes down (unless the forecaster uses a qualifying term such as"heavy" or "light").

Anyone keeping a running count of how often they're right or wrong and how it compares to dem percentages dey use? Smiff?

Messy winter storm bears down on Chicago

Of the estimated 1.22" water equivalent precipitation the approaching storm may produce here later Saturday and Sunday, temperature profiles of the atmosphere above Chicago as it passes suggest around 17% may falls as ice pellets or some snow, 33% is to fall as freezing rain and 50% is to fall as rain.

Tuesday's modest cool-off just the start; chilliest air in 6 months Wednesday
Tom Skilling
October 9, 2007

Record warmth, especially this time of the year, is all too often followed by dramatic temperature downturns. Tuesday's comparatively modest 14(degrees) retreat in high temperature is only the beginning. Wednesday's 50s will be Chicago's coolest in nearly 6 months. The day's predicted 55(degrees) high will be the coolest here since a 53(degrees) reading on April 27. The pullback from Monday's 87(degrees) equals the normal decline in temperatures from July to early November--but it's to take place in just two days. A powerhouse eastern Pacific storm, predicted to attain the central pressure of a Category 3 hurricane (963 mb./28.44") for a time Tuesday morning is behind the stunning temperature turnaround. Warmth flooding up that system's east side is to buckle the jet stream northward over western North America--a development which sends a pool of unseasonably cool air plunging southward over the Midwest mid and late week. The cloudy, chilly air mass is to combine with NNE winds Thursday to produce lake-effect rain showers.

News San Diego
Storm headed this way will pack a punch
By Robert Krier

SAN DIEGO – An intense, winter-like storm is headed toward San Diego County, and the National Weather Service is growing increasingly confident it will pack a punch when it arrives. Forecasters are giving the storm a wide window – sometime between Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning. They say that when it hits, intense downpours, thunderstorms, hail and even snow in the higher mountains are all possible. Weather Service forecaster Ed Clark said the beaches and coastal valleys should get a third to a half inch of rain, and the mountains could get three quarters of an inch. Temperatures around the county will be well below seasonal averages, and the snow level could drop to 6,000 feet Friday. In advance of the storm Wednesday, skies near the coast are expected to be mostly overcast, and there's a slight chance of drizzle. Strong winds should kick up in the mountains and deserts late Wednesday. The storm is expected to be near the Bay Area Wednesday, then move down the Central California coast Thursday. It is forecast to pick up strength before moving inland over Southern California Thursday. Cold storms in September are extremely rare in San Diego. The storm, if it develops as forecast, would be the strongest storm from the northern Pacific in September since 1986, according to the Weather Service. The 1986 storm brought 1.04 inches of rain to San Diego.

raining again in Chicago?

St. Louis 6, Chi Cubs 4, Delayed 7th inn.

I'm tellings ya, if sKILLy was the "weather"man round here, he would be driven insane in a matter of weeks. No more "thunderstorm alerts" or "rain events" or "there's a 20% chance we could all be dead by 4 o'clock...run for your lives." This from local "weather watch" page on August 6th:

The city is in the midst of pretty decent streak without measurable rain. After today, it will be 105 days since it rained in town. The last time was April 23, when 0.01 of an inch was recorded. There have been four days with a trace of rain since then, but the city hasn't even recorded a trace since May 21. The longest the city has ever gone without measurable rain is 182 days, from April 17 to Oct. 16, 2004. But long dry streaks are certainly not unusual in San Diego. We'll have to make it into September without rain just to crack the top 20.

I can assure you there hasn't been a single drop in the last two weeks, nieder.

Bogus tips vex meteorologists
50 phony sightings of storms

Forecasters in Illinois and Wisconsin spent days checking out phony weather reports this spring after a weather-savvy person submitted more than 50 fake sightings to a National Weather Service Web site that meteorologists use to track severe weather. Over a six-week period this spring, someone filed reports, sometimes several in one day, describing felled trees, hail and tornadoes that never occurred....

about da linkage...

I notice that LaughAloud one is a lot more civilized than this one. Perhaps the linkage association will drag it down to our level. I also notice that that Gov Docs Guy thingy appears to be down. Did it finally become so boring that it put itself to sleep? And oh yeah, sKILLy said it would be nice here today, and it was. Take dat, haters!
