i think there is an implication here that this is a bad thing?

Golfer Daly arrested at Hooters after drinking binge: report

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker)—Former PGA golfer John Daly recently spent a night in jail after Winston-Salem police found him drunk outside a city restaurant, the Winston-Salem Journal reported Wednesday. Lt. Tyrone Phelps told the newspaper that Daly was held at the Forsyth County Jail early Sunday morning to sober up. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, paramedics went to a Hooters restaurant at 1 a.m. after receiving a report that Daly had passed out. When police arrived, they found Daly intoxicated and unwilling to go to a hospital. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. “He didn’t want to talk to the (police officers),” Phelps told the newspaper.

The newspaper reported that Daly was traveling on a tour bus and told police that the people on the bus did not want him back on it after the Hooters closed. According to North Carolina state law, police can in some cases jail a person overnight to sober up.
Daly was later released on an unsecured bond. A winner of two majors, Daly, 42, has not had a PGA Tour card for the past two years. In March, Butch Harmon quit as his swing coach. At the time, Harmon said of Daly that “the most important thing in his life is getting drunk.”

the non-apology apology (cont'd)

NEW YORK (AP)—NBC Sports golf analyst and idiot, brain-dead moron Johnny Miller apologized for his description of U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate, saying the comments had “absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity.” Mediate, a 45-year-old Pennsylvanian of Italian heritage, held a one-stroke lead over Tiger Woods during the fourth round Sunday. Miller said Mediate “looks like the guy who cleans Tiger’s swimming pool.” He also said, “Guys with the name ‘Rocco’ don’t get on the trophy, do they?”

“I apologize to anyone who was offended by my remarks,” Miller said in a statement Friday through NBC. “My intention was to convey my affection and admiration for Rocco’s everyman qualities and had absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity. I chose my words poorly and in the future will be more careful.” Woods beat Mediate in a playoff that lasted 19 holes for his third U.S. Open title.

If only Smiff had a campus parking pass...

...so i could be a smug jerk and bleed some plutocratic golf c@ck$uc#er dry...

UCSD Parking Pass + UCSD ID for U.S. Open - $500 (La Jolla)

So you've come from near and far to see Tiger. Unfortunately, by now you've probably realized that there are about 10,000 less parking spots available than there actually should be.

There is hope...

I am selling my UCSD "Student" Parking Pass along with my UCSD ID. This means you can park in any "S" spot on campus and even get closer to the Torrey Pines shuttles than the coveted "Parking Lot U." Without a UCSD pass, you will be forced to go to Qualcomm, where shuttle lines and traffic will probably cost you 2+ hours each way, everyday.

Other posters have put up their parking passes for sale. But without a UCSD ID, a parking pass by itself is worthless, since they will be checking IDs at all campus entry points along with the parking pass. I am selling BOTH the parking pass and the ID.

Of course, you may not look like me (I'm white with brown hair). So all you have to do is tell the intellectuals at UCSD Parking that you are going to help your stepson move out of his on-campus dorm (it's finals week here). Present the valid UCSD Parking Pass and UCSD ID that I have supplied you and you're in baby. Problem solved, traffic avoided.

Call David at (714) 496-9229.

the ultimate sacrifice

For the first time, Bush revealed a personal way in which he has tried to acknowledge the sacrifice of soldiers and their families: He has given up golf.

"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf,” he said. “I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

A bunch of rich phokks playing golf? Why yes, that is more important than, oh, final exams...

They are also encouraging staff to work from home, or go on vacation... Well, i am told that Tiger owns Torrey Pines, and Tiger winning another major ranks #1 on the list of Current Important Things: 1) Tiger winning another major 2) The Economy 3) Gas Prices 4) American Idol 5) War in Iraq. So we all have to sacrifice during Tigertime. But if he loses to, oh, some white schmuck from South Africa again, don't even bother showing up for the British Open, Eldrick...

SUBJECT: U.S. Open and Spring Quarter Final Examinations

As you may know, the U.S. Open Golf Tournament will be held at the Torrey Pines Golf Course the week of June 9 through June 15, the same week that Spring Quarter final examinations are scheduled. The traffic impact on the campus, and on all who work and attend here, will be very significant. For more information, see the March 21st Campus Notice from UC San Diego Transportation and Parking Services,
http://adminrecords.ucsd.edu/Notices/2008/2008-3-21-1.html).

Please be aware of the following regarding Spring Quarter final exams:

* In-class final exams must be delivered as scheduled, according to the Registrar's Schedule of Final Exams (
http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,18016,00.html).

* Instructors are expected to administer all in-class final exams on the scheduled date and time, regardless of the Tournament's impact on the campus.

* Instructors may opt to require a take-home final exam in place of the in-class final. If so, the take-home final exam cannot be due prior to the scheduled date and time of the in-class final exam. On a class-wide basis, electronic submission by students of completed final exams is not acceptable.

* Instructors may, but are not required to, accommodate requests for alternate exam dates during final exam week.

* No instructor may administer a final exam before final exam week. (See Academic Senate Policy on Final Exams,
http://www-senate.ucsd.edu/committees/cep/policychanges/midterm.htm.)

* Instructors may not assign an Incomplete grade because a student missed an in-class final exam due to traffic, lack of parking spaces, etc. (See Academic Senate Regulation on Incompletes,
http://www-senate.ucsd.edu/manual/Regulations/PartI/500.htm#500b).

* The responsibilities of Teaching Assistants continue as usual during final exam week.

The coincidence of the U.S. Open and finals week is unquestionably very inconvenient. But, with thoughtful planning and careful adherence to the above standards, the UC San Diego community, working together, can prevent any disruption of our academic enterprise. Your cooperation in this effort is important and greatly appreciated. And Kick Ass, Tiger!!

not my fault, but dere is a McClure involved

Jimmy Gobble had a cactus thorn removed from one of his big toes on Sunday morning.

Gobble got the thorn stuck in his foot after accidentally kicking a cactus while playing golf early in spring training. Gobble apparently felt the pain, but continued with normal spring activities. "They said it was almost an inch, three-quarters of an inch long," pitching coach Bob McClure said Sunday. "How he was pitching with that, I'll never know." Gobble had a 3.02 ERA in 53 2/3 innings last year out of the bullpen and he will act as the Royals' primary left-handed specialist this season.
