The Day

I kept wondering if they flashed back to the podium after the convocation if Justice Stevens was yelling into a dead microphone, "I quit, I quit."

It's a shame Strom Thurmond was not here to witness this day. On the other hand, he would have loved Michelle.

It was a paradigm shift for me today. I was hoping that after Bush left office he would be prosecuted. Or if that failed, shot. Maybe I'm just in a particularly good mood, but I hope they can convict him and members of his administration for all the crimes they committed in office. Whether he or anyone is ever held specifically responsible for it, beyond censure, I'm not sure I care anymore. History will judge him, and he is unreachable, irredeemable and unreformable by any method of punishment that I can fathom.

This is getting ridiculous

Is Wrigley still big enough to host a football game?

On the one hand, Fung might actually go to a 'Cats game if it were that close. On da udder hand, it's Wrigley. Where dreams go to die. Horribly. Why don't you try charging less for a game instead?

Say it ain't So!

The Cubs have reportedly agreed to a minor league deal with outfielder So Taguchi.
Assuming that Felix Pie is gone, Taguchi would battle Joey Gathright for a job as a reserve outfielder in spring training. However, it'd be one of those cases in which a team would much prefer to see the younger player win the job. Taguchi hit .220/.283/.297 in 91 at-bats for the Phils last year.

MS. PERINO: Welcome, everyone, to the last press briefing of the Bush administration. It's hard to believe that this is my 145th and final press briefing behind this podium. Over 1,000 briefings have been given by press secretaries and deputy press secretaries, at this podium, since the beginning of the administration -- starting, of course, with our very good friend (and tremendous asshole--ed.), Ari Fleischer.

Life imitates the movies (cont'd)

HAMMOND, Ind. - In a scene straight out of the movie "A Christmas Story," a 10-year-old Hammond boy got his tongue stuck to a metal light pole.

Police say the unidentified 4th grader was able to tell them a friend had dared him to lick the pole Wednesday night. Temperatures in Hammond were around 10 degrees at the time.

By the time an ambulance arrived, the boy was able to yank his tongue off the frozen pole.

Police say ambulance personnel explained to the boy's mother how to care for his bleeding tongue.

Cheney on Iraq: all Saddam's fault... and Clinton's...

LEHRER: The President has also said that mistakes -- he made some mistakes in the last eight years. Did you make any?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, make mistakes -- I can think of places where I underestimated things. For example, when you talk about Iraq, the extent of which the Iraqi population had been beaten down by Saddam Hussein was greater than I anticipated. That is, we thought that the Iraqis would be able to bounce back fairly quickly, once Saddam was gone and their new government established, and step up to take major responsibilities for governing Iraq, building a military and so forth. And that took longer than I expected. (Riiight... it couldn't have been your infantile assumption that destroying a country and removing a government in a country with centuries-long animosities is a good way to start a country on the path to democracy... Oh yeah, "bounce back" -- like in the cartoons where Wile E. Coyote blows up and then wiggles his head a few times and his face regenerates itself? Well reality ain't Road Runner, @ss#hole...Ed.).

Q When you look back on that, why? How did that miscalculation come about?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, we didn't have that good of intelligence (bad brainzzz... Ed.) I don't think, with respect to sort of a state of affairs inside Iraq. A lot of that had been wiped out over the years. Saddam Hussein was so brutal, killed so many people, slaughtered so many innocents, that it had a lasting effect on Iraqi society that was greater than I expected. . .

Q But Mr. Vice President, getting from there to here, 4,500 Americans have died, at least 100,000 Iraqis have died. Has it been worth that?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: I think so.

Q Why?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Because I'm a soulless, blood sucking, creature of the night. Well what he actually said is here.

Still, there has to be a way to pin all this on Slick Willie...

THE VICE PRESIDENT: No. I think the argument that this is a failed presidency is just dead wrong. I think we'll hear that from some of our critics, but when I look back at what we've been able to do, we dealt with big issues, we didn't deal with school uniforms. We dealt with the fact that we brought down two of the worst regimes in the 20th century, the Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

We were forced -- when we arrived, shortly after we arrived -- to have to deal with the global war on terror, which had not been managed properly before that. We ended up inheriting this situation, which has been very challenging, but we've been very successful at it. And when you look at what we've been able to do, both in terms of our activities overseas, as well as our operations that allowed us to block any further attack against the United States here at home, I think those are great successes. And I think there aren't very many administrations that can point to successes on that scale.

Once K-Mad drafts him, he'll be on a slow boat back to China w/o either of his labrums

Tigers signed LHP Fu-Te Ni to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. An agreement was reached last month, but the Tigers announced it today. Ni, 26, went 5-12 with a 3.34 ERA and a league-leading 132 strikeouts in 145 1/3 innings for his team in Taiwan last season. The sidearmer is highly unlikely to make it as a starter in the majors, but perhaps he could have some success in the bullpen.

Blizzard, bitter cold, freezing locusts in forecast

A blizzard warning is in effect for late tonight through noon Tuesday.

A blizzard with whiteout conditions is expected. The warning was an upgrade from an earlier blizzard watch.

The National Weather Service said a strong winter storm system across the Dakotas will reach northern Illinois and northwest Indiana by tonight. There is a likelihood of falling and blowing snow with strong winds and extremely limited visibility.

Accumulating snow is expected to begin this afternoon, with 2 to 5 inches possible across far northern Illinois and 1 to 3 inches elsewhere, the weather service said.

Strong northwest winds gusting to 35 m.p.h. will result in significant blowing and drifting snow and possible blizzard or near-blizzard conditions overnight into Tuesday morning. Visibility may be less than a quarter-mile, and travel will become extremely dangerous and may become nearly impossible, the weather service warned.

Arctic air moving into the area behind the system is expected to produce windchills of 15 degrees below zero to 20 below late tonight into Tuesday morning. . .

worrying that this didn't generate a good LoC rant yet

"Let’s get this straight from the start: When it comes to my Hall of Fame ballot, I believe in giving the benefit of the doubt. I don’t want to be a curmudgeon with a ridiculously high standard — not when the standard for election is 75 percent.

So, by design, I have decided that if I can make a good case for a player, I am going to vote for him.

Sometimes I surprise even myself. I did it this year, checking eight names the first day I considered the ballot and going back to add a ninth just before putting it in the mail. That would be Mark Grace, the guy who sometimes seemed as much a politician as a player during his 13 seasons as the Cubs’ first baseman.

He didn’t hit for power, which is the first thing most people look for in a first baseman. But otherwise he was terrific: .303 career average, more than 11/2 walks for every strikeout, elite fielding skills, leadership in the clubhouse. He led the majors in hits in the 1990s, with 180-plus in seven of those seasons.

Deceased K-Mad Pitchers (A Partial List)

It's Hot Stove Heater Time! And at Lattice of Coincidence, that means taking a look back at the freak show that is KMad's hatred of pitchers and all they stand for. He would kill one the way a storm trooper would kill an ewok. The way that Tom Cruise would a psychiatrist. The way that Dick Cheney would an innocent sleepy infant suckling at her mother's breast.

Here is a list compiled of Deceased KMad pitchers (an * means they are or were also members of the Blue Ward Cyclones Baseball Collective of Brooklyn, New York).

1. Taylor Buchholtz
2. Cole Hamels (*)(?); Ryan Madsen (?); Brad Lidge (?) - Smiff was raving in the post and not quite clear
3. Eric Bedard (killed very dead)
4. Eric Hurley
5. Manny Acosta
6. Brett Myers (*)
7. Pat Misch
8. Will Ledezma
9. Ross Ohlendorf
10. John Bale
11. Joey Devine

The future is ruled by she who controls the botnets

You too, can be a patriot! From softpedia...a kind of interesting thing about how interactive we can now be in warfare!

Israel supporters respond to the cyber-attacks launched by Islamic hackers through DDoS. A group of students have developed an application that allows Israel sympathizers to use their computer resources and Internet bandwith in order to knock Palestinian websites offline.

The online group calling themselves “Help Israel Win,” is distributing a Trojan-like application that enables them to launch DDoS attacks. Installing this program onto a computer will turn it into a drone, and will place it at the disposal of the hacktivists. What differentiates this tool from regular malware is that the installation is performed voluntarily by individuals who sympathize with Israel's efforts.

“Our goal is to use this power in order to disrupt our enemy's efforts to destroy the state of Israel. The more support we get, the more efficient we are,” the website set up by the group reads. The hackers included an uninstaller for the application and vowed to dismantle the botnet, once the conflict in Gaza Strip is over.

Bojan Zdrnja, security researcher at the SANS Internet Storm Center, has analyzed the botnet client application and concluded that it can be a serious security risk, because of its update functionality. By using this option, the bot runners could theoretically install additional potentially malicious applications on the computers.

“While at the moment it does not appear to do anything bad (it just connects to the IRC server and sites there – there also appeared to be around 1000 machines running this when I tested this) the owner can probably do whatever he wants with machines running this,” Bojan writes. He also confirms that the uninstaller seems to function correctly, as stated by its creators, but it would be useless if other malware is installed.

The botnet command and control server is located on IRC, and the application uses a legit IRC client library in order to contact it. The group claims that over 8,000 individuals have joined the cause so far by willingly installing the “Patriot” tool on their computers. The students have even gone to the length of translating their website in other languages such as French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, in addition to English and Hebrew.

This is not the first time when end-users have assisted hackers in launching politically-motivated attacks. A highly similar project was launched by a Russian group during the conflict in Georgia. The website encouraged Russian sympathizers to install a botnet client and allow their bandwith to be used in order to launch denial of service attacks against Georgian websites.

and FURTHERMORE

When Kirk is kicking Burris's @ss in the fall of next year, people won't remember that Blago called the Democrats' bluff, they'll remember how quickly the Dems caved afterward.

Why the Democrats will lose the Senate seat in 2010

Because they think that "if a Democrat loses a U.S. Senate race in Illinois, it will mean that things have gone horribly wrong in the next two years, and Roland Burris will be the least of the Democrats' problems."

It wasn't that long ago that Illinois was a swing state (the Blagoviator is the first Democratic governor in, what, 100 years? Or did it only seem that long? And the last two went to jail too...). I'm not sure if George Bush did for the Republicans nationally what George Ryan did for the Republicans in Illinois or the other way around, but Dems only started winning every statewide election when Ryan became the poster child for political corruption, and the Democrats seem to have settled that old score nicely.

If I were Mark Kirk, I'd have my press release announcing my candidacy ready to fire off five minutes after Senator Blagovurris (D-God) is sworn in.

Jesse White Tumbles

Notice how eagerly he backpedals when faced with the horrific prospect of being the last one with his integrity intact...

Reid and Durbin said Burris' certificate, since it lacks White's signature, violates a Senate rule that has been in place since the 19th century.

"This has been a rule in the United States Senate since 1884," Durbin said. "We have never, ever (ever, ever, ever... ed.) waived this rule for any election or appointment.

"Everyone has to present a certificate, signed by the governor, cosigned by the secretary of state. ... So it's an important rule and one not easily challenged or changed," said Durbin, who noted that he has known Burris for decades.

White, however, disputed the claim that his signature was needed on Burris' certificate, saying Wednesday that he was the "fall guy" for politicians who oppose Burris.

"They could have seated him without my signature," White told WGN Radio. "It carries a lot of weight, but my signature is mostly ceremonial rather than being a point of law."

In other words, my opposition was strictly symbolic, not meant to be taken seriously, nothing to see here (move along), hey where are you guys going, don't leave me standing here, etc. etc.

That's a Tasty Squirrel (cont'd)

Just how did the Brits get such a poor reputation for food...?

Saving a Squirrel by Eating One

RARE roast beef splashed with meaty jus, pork enrobed in luscious crackling fat, perhaps a juicy, plump chicken ... these are feasts that come to mind when one thinks of quintessential British food. Lately, however, a new meat is gracing the British table: squirrel.
Though squirrel has appeared occasionally in British cookery, history doesn’t deem it a dining favorite. Even during World War II and the period of austerity that followed, the Ministry of Food valiantly promoted the joys of squirrel soup and pie. British carnivores replied, “No, thank you.”
These days, however, in farmers’ markets, butcher shops, village pubs and elegant restaurants, squirrel is selling as fast as gamekeepers and hunters can bring it in.
“Part of the interest is curiosity and novelty,” said Barry Shaw of Shaw Meats, who sells squirrel meat at the Wirral Farmers Market near Liverpool. “It’s a great conversation starter for dinner parties.”
While some have difficulty with the cuteness versus deliciousness ratio — that adorable little face, those itty-bitty claws — many feel that eating squirrel is a way to do something good for the environment while enjoying a unique gastronomical experience....

Joe the Plumber to become war correspondent in Israel for conservative Web site
By Associated Press
12:58 PM CST, January 7, 2009

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Joe The Plumber is putting down his wrenches and picking up a reporter's notebook.

The Ohio man who became a household name during the presidential campaign says he is heading to Israel as a war correspondent for the conservative Web site pjtv.com.

Samuel J. Wurzelbacher (WUR'-zuhl-bah-kur) says he'll spend 10 days covering the fighting. He tells WNWO-TV in Toledo that he wants to let Israel's "'Average Joes' share their story."

Wurzelbacher gained attention during the final weeks of the campaign when he asked Barack Obama about his tax plan.

He later joined Republican John McCain on the campaign trail. At one stop, he agreed with a McCain supporter who asked if he believed a vote for Obama was a vote for the death of Israel.

___Information from: WNWO-TV, http://www.nbc24.com/

Well then... what was all the fuss about? I just wish we'd known this earlier...

'Paying no heed to what's right or wrong'

"In accepting this appointment to the Senate, Mr. Burris has done what was good for him, paying no heed to what is right or wrong, just as he did with Rolando Cruz."

Attorney Lawrence Marshall, one of the lawyers who helped obtain Cruz's acquittal in 1995 and who is now a professor at Stanford Law School, said in a separate interview, "Then and now, this is really the same person and the same behavior, which is that -- although I don't think Roland Burris is an evil man -- I do think his career has been about one thing and one only -- the advancement of Roland Burris."

Big shoes to fill, but then again he does have his own monument, so maybe he's up to it

News item: Senate Democrats plan to accept Roland Burris for President-elect Barack Obama's vacant seat.

Blogger's spell-checker still doesn't recognize "Barack Obama," or "Blogger's," by the way.

Is there any question that he's the next Bears QB?

It might have been the final college game for (Ball State quarterback Nate) Davis, who has indicated he was considering skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft. He was 9-of-29 passing for 145 yards and lost two fumbles and an interception in the first half. Davis was not made available for interviews after the game. He was 0-for-10 in the second half.

Reid to Blago: this is how it's done

As reported in the New York Times:

Despite repeated threats from Senate Democrats that they would not seat anyone Mr. Blagojevich appointed, Mr. Reid said, “There’s always room to negotiate.”

“So you’re not saying no completely that he won’t serve?” asked David Gregory, the host of “Meet the Press.”

“That’s right,” Mr. Reid said, nodding. "There's always a deal to be made behind closed doors, especially for something so phokking golden."

This will be fun...

Should we start a pool and pick a date for when he inevitably blows up and says something to the affect of "Fuck those fuckin' fans who come out here and say they're Cub fans that are supposed to be behind you, rippin' every fuckin' thing you do. I'll tell you one fuckin' thing, I hope we get fuckin' hotter than shit, just to stuff it up them 40,000 fuckin' people that show up every fuckin' day, because if they're the real Chicago fuckin' fans, they can kiss my fuckin' ass right downtown and PRINT IT! They're really, really behind you around here...my fuckin' ass."

ESPN reports that the Cubs and Milton Bradley have agreed to terms on a three-year, $30 million contract. That was the expected amount, but it still looks like a pretty poor deal for the Cubs, especially with Pat Burrell signing for $16 million over two years on the same day. Bradley may or may not still be an above average defensive outfielder. What we can be relatively certain of is that he won't be a healthy one for long. Bradley has played in 130 games just once in his career. He's an underrated star when he's on the field, but he's not worth a $30 million commitment.

The Final Outrage

Buffalo loses to UConn 38-20 in the International Bowl in Toronto (the MAC now losing in foreign countries), to bring their conference bowl record to 0-4.

Meanwhile, after Ohio St. loses to Texas, the Big Ten will finish at 1-6 (and that doesn't even include Michigan, who sucked so bad they didn't qualify for a bowl).

Resolved: the Midwest needs to take a break from college football next year.

Canada's forests, once huge help on greenhouse gases, now contribute to climate change

VANCOUVER — As relentlessly bad as the news about global warming seems to be, with ice at the poles melting faster than scientists had predicted and world temperatures rising higher than expected, there was at least a reservoir of hope stored here in Canada's vast forests.

The country's 1.2 million square miles of trees have been dubbed the "lungs of the planet" by ecologists because they account for more than 7 percent of Earth's total forest lands. They could always be depended upon to suck in vast quantities of carbon dioxide, naturally cleansing the world of much of the harmful heat-trapping gas.

But not anymore.

In an alarming yet little-noticed series of recent studies, scientists have concluded that Canada's precious forests, stressed from damage caused by global warming, insect infestations and persistent fires, have crossed an ominous line and are now pumping out more climate-changing carbon dioxide than they are sequestering.

Worse yet, the experts predict that Canada's forests will remain net carbon sources, as opposed to carbon storage "sinks," until at least 2022, and possibly much longer.

"We are seeing a significant distortion of the natural trend," said Werner Kurz, senior research scientist at the Canadian Forest Service and the leading expert on carbon cycles in the nation's forests. "Since 1999, and especially in the last five years, the forests have shifted from being a carbon sink to a carbon source."

Translation: Earth's lungs have come down with emphysema. Canada's forests are no longer our friends. . .

A toast to Blago

That's the kind of scandal Americans can enjoy, and we'd forgotten how much fun they could be. These days when news of a big scandal breaks it means another hundred billion dollars went missing or another major industry collapsed. Except for your scandal, Rod. The fact that the country is a shambles has made your scandal all that much more fun. You're like the guy who shows up five minutes after the apocalypse and demands he get the 4% raise he was promised before the flames engulfed the earth.

And boy do you know how to milk it. You're not taking your lumps with dignity, doing what you can to limit the damage done. You're going down swinging. Christ, just yesterday you appointed someone to that Senate seat and made sure that anyone who challenges the appointment would be called a racist! You essentially called your legislature a lynch mob! That was fantastic!

You're beautiful Rod. You're clueless, you're guileless, and most of all, you're guilty as shit. And that hair. Oh man, that gorgeous hair.

Prop 8 - the historical antecedent

In November 1964, an overwhelming 65 percent majority of the state's voters approved Proposition 14, a constitutional amendment that overturned a fair-housing law and allowed racial discrimination in property sales and rentals.

Man steals fire truck to drive home for Christmas: police

Police in South Salt Lake, Utah, have arrested a man they say tried to steal a fire truck so he could drive home -- to Washington -- for Christmas.

Detective Gary Keller says firefighters on a medical call heard the $500,000 truck's air horn blaring Monday and ran outside. They found a man in the driver's seat trying to drive away.

Residents (Fung?) demand: plow my block

"Isn't this supposed to be Chicago, the city that works?. . . Works my foot!"*

Matt SMIFF, spokesman for the city's department of Streets and Sanitation, defended the city's plowing of side streets. He said city crews hit the side streets three times last week, the third time Saturday night to spread salt to handle the arctic weather. The city was planning to plow side streets after rush hour Tuesday night, depending on how the latest winter storm evolved.

The city, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois Tollway all had their full fleets of trucks out to handle Tuesday's storm, which produced up to four inches of snow. Freezing rain was expected overnight, with more snow forecast for today.

"People need to understand the weather we had was exceptionally harsh," said Smiff (LAME... Ed.), who said city residents can call 311 to report problems on their streets. . .

* Sounds like a sanitized version. What she probably actually said: "Isn't dis 'sposed to be Chicago, Da City Dat Works? My phokking @SS!"

War on Christmas (cont)

Perhaps the folks at Faux Noise should go after dese guys instead of the "happy holidays" folks over here...

Christmas turkeys fall prey to Taliban bomb
KABUL, AFGHANISTAN Dec 19 2008 13:44

A lorry (dead giveaway that this isn't an American writing - ed) load of Christmas turkeys for British troops in Afghanistan has fallen victim to a roadside bomb planted by Taliban insurgents, it was reported Friday. The frozen birds were completely destroyed in an explosion on route from Pakistan to British headquarters at Camp Bastion in the volatile Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defence in London said a consignment of replacement birds had been flown out to make up for the loss and ensure that the traditional Christmas dinner for troops can go ahead. -- Sapa-dp

Most Outrageous Comments of 2008

you don't have to get drunk and sit outside in zero degrees for four hours watching the Bears suck to develop numbness in the upper extremity

Early Miscalculations

On the eve of the invasion, as it began to dawn on a few officials that the price for rebuilding Iraq would be vastly greater than they had been told, the degree of miscalculation was illustrated in an encounter between Donald H. Rumsfeld, then the defense secretary, and Jay Garner, a retired lieutenant general who had hastily been named the chief of what would be a short-lived civilian authority called the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance.

The history records how Mr. Garner presented Mr. Rumsfeld with several rebuilding plans, including one that would include projects across Iraq.

“What do you think that’ll cost?” Mr. Rumsfeld asked of the more expansive plan.

“I think it’s going to cost billions of dollars,” Mr. Garner said.

“My friend,” Mr. Rumsfeld replied, “if you think we’re going to spend a billion dollars of our money over there, you are sadly mistaken.”

since when has "numbness in the upper extremity" been a warning sign for Bears fans?

Cold may be unbearable
Football fans are warned over added perils of alcohol
(UnBEARable! Get it? Funny stuff... Ed...)

Booze and the Bears go together naturally for many fans at Soldier Field, but an expert warns that may be a dangerous combination on a frigid Monday night.

With the windchill expected to make lakefront temperatures feel like around zero during the Bears-Packers game, the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health warned fans to beware the dangers of alcohol.

Alcohol makes blood vessels dilate and stretch, allowing body heat to escape more quickly, said Dr. Terry Mason. . .

"It doesn't take very long to get cold," he said. "Don't wait until your extremities start to feel numb. . ."

"Unfortunately, it's going to be pretty darn cold," said meteorologist Eric Lenning.

The Daily SHOCKER

Cheney acknowledged that he had disagreed with Bush's decision to remove embattled Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld in late 2006, saying that "the president doesn't always take my advice."

"I was a Rumsfeld man," Cheney said. "I'd helped recruit him, and I thought he did a good job for us."

"Go phokk yourself," he added, beating a slithery retreat to his underground lair before risking exposure to the purifying rays of the sun.

‘Bush Shoe’ Gives Firm a Footing in the Market

(Footing! Get it? Hah - good one... Ed...)

ISTANBUL — When a pair of black leather oxfords hurled at President Bush in Baghdad produced a gasp heard around the world, a Turkish cobbler had a different reaction: They were his shoes.

“We have been producing that specific style, which I personally designed, for 10 years, so I couldn’t have missed it, no way,” said Ramazan Baydan, a shoemaker in Istanbul. “As a shoemaker, you understand.”

Although his assertion has been impossible to verify — cobblers from Lebanon, China and Iraq have also staked claims to what is quickly becoming some of the most famous footwear in the world — orders for Mr. Baydan’s shoes, formerly known as Ducati Model 271 and since renamed “The Bush Shoe,” have poured in from around the world.

A new run of 15,000 pairs, destined for Iraq, went into production on Thursday, he said. A British distributor has asked to become the Baydan Shoe Company’s European sales representative, with a first order of 95,000 pairs, and an American company (Gitmo-bound? Ed.) has placed an order for 18,000 pairs. Four distributors are competing to represent the company in Iraq, where Baydan sold 19,000 pairs of this model for about $40 each last year. . .

Here's an observation: most of the crap in holiday catalogs is s#i+ that would never interest you in a meeelllion years. The difference between my observation and Andy Rooney's is that I didn't make five figures over two minutes making it.

Brian Giles: A Shitstain of Humanity

Click on the link for the video of him punching his girlfriend to the ground. You stay classy, Brian.

Giles underwent anger management to resolve 2006 misdemeanor charge

Padres outfielder Brian Giles entered into a plea agreement for a misdemeanor domestic violence charge that stemmed from a video-recorded incident at a Phoenix bar on Aug. 27, 2006.
Giles, 37, was required to complete anger-management counseling as part of the deal in exchange for the case being dropped, said John Tutelman of the Phoenix city attorney's office. After his counseling was completed, the case was dropped this past February.
Giles' alleged domestic violence history has come to light after the former girlfriend, Cheri Olvera, recently sued him for more than $10 million, alleging a string of abuse, including batterings while she was pregnant.

Giles has had that look of a "totally on roids" candidate, given his power outage since 2002. Looks like it fried his brain, if it wasn't fried already. Wherever he's playing next year, he needs to be booed off the field and/or (car) batteries thrown at him.

two things to know about Blago's lawyer

1. Former clients like "Jimmy 'The Bomber' Catura (federal fraud, 1972) and Billy Dauber, feared mob enforcer, both ... later whacked by the Outfit... Pat Marcy, 1st Ward powerbroker and mob court fixer; 'Blind Louie' Cavallaro, juice loan collector and enforcer, and Jerry Scalise, Marlborough diamond jewel thief" aren't necessarily among his favorites, according to Carol Marin. Pet lovers protest cats on the menu in China (AP)

GUANGZHOU, China – While animal lovers in Beijing protested the killing of cats for food on Thursday, a butcher in Guangdong province — where felines are the main ingredient in a famous soup — just shrugged her shoulders and wielded her cleaver. "Cats have a strong flavor. Dogs taste much better, but if you really want cat meat, I can have it delivered by tomorrow," said the butcher, who gave only her surname, Huang....

How to Suck at Democracy -- the PhD seminar

Today, just moments ago, the infamous Lizard People ballot came up for the Canvassing Board's review!

This ballot was initially counted as a Franken vote. The Coleman campaign challenged the ballot, claiming "Lizard People" was an identifying mark. The Board voted to uphold the challenge, arguing that they couldn't be certain that "Lizard People" wasn't a real person's name.

And in a separate post...

If Coleman wins 127 challenges and Franken wins 122, that would mean a net of 5 votes for Coleman. If the Franken campaign's estimate was correct that it was winning the re-count by 4 votes assuming that all challenges would be rejected, that would produce a Coleman win by a grand total of ... one vote!
