Six in 10 of all voters surveyed say they approve of Sen. John McCain's selection of the Alaska governor as his running mate. And some voters, 25 percent, say the pick makes them more likely to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket in November.
Yet, only 42 percent think that Palin, a first-term governor and former mayor of Wasilla, think the running mate has what it takes to serve as president should something happen to an elected McCain.

In udder words, what Joe Lieberman sed - stop with all this morbid talk about Mavericky McBush. He'll be fine. He'll serve out the whole term. Nothing will happen to him. Keep moving.
The question of whether a VP "has what it takes" to be President seems weird to me. I mean, if something happens to the President, it doesn't matter whether the person "has what it takes" because like it or not, they have the job. One could argue that W didn't have what it took, but we voted him in, so he went ahead and did what he did. If it's such a big deal that the person have what it takes, then we should just vote over if the President has to resign. Zambia's president just died, so they're gonna vote for a new one to finish out the term (or maybe they get a new term, I'm not sure which). So all you have to worry about there is whether the VP can "act" as president while the President is out of the country, or undergoing procedures that render him unconscious.
I guess I prefer to look at the ticket as a whole. And I think I've found that the VP really doesn't do much to help or hurt the candidate in my eyes. Lemme think back to the elections I've voted in. Who'd Dole pick? Kemp? Did nada 4 me. Bush picking Cheney? Wasn't gonna vote for him anyway. Gore choosing Lieberman? If I felt better about Bush, this might have actually driven me away, coz I didn't get it, but I didn't, so this did nuttin 4 me. Kerry Edwards? Again, wasn't gonna go with W, so Kerry coulda picked a monkey. But the problem with that ticket was Kerry, not Edwards.
In udder words (to bring it full circle) this VP distraction will last annudder week, den we'll get back to BHO vs McBush. As it shud be.
