Steve (Baltimore, MD): Nate Silver today called the Steve Trachsel trade "one of the worst in the past several seasons." Is he being overly harsh, or did the O's pull of a steal?
Christina Kahrl: The O's pulled off a steal. I wrote about that a bit in the edition of TA that will be up within 24 hours, but yes, it's a genuinely great move. It would have been a solid pickup if they'd only gotten Cherry, and that's even if Cherry only wound up being a useful situational right-hander. Cherry might be better than that, but Moore can be the lefty side of a quality platoon at third base.

den dere's dis one...
eric (chicago): Did Hendry make a mistake trading Blevins? he'll go through 4/5 levels in the 07 season? legit breakout yr for him?
Christina Kahrl: He did, but I don't think it's as big as the mistake in trading Scott Moore for Steve Trachsel. If Blevins shines as a big league reliever next season, it's a testament to how a quality farm system can produce live arms and ship them out for stretch drive help. I'm surprised that Kendall's been as useful as he's been, but it beats playing Koyie Hill, so Hendry has something to show in his defense. For the A's, this was a win-win deal from the moment it was made. They now know Suzuki's their catcher in '08, and they also have Blevins to show for their troubles. The money? That was already gone, from the moment they made the deal with Pittsburgh.
