WASHINGTON -- The national election Tuesday was not only historic for the election of the first African-American president in the nation's history but also for how little the avalanche of Democratic votes changed the political alignment in Congress.
The first Democratic Electoral College landslide in decades did not result in a tight race for control of Congress.
When Franklin D. Roosevelt won his second term for president in 1936, the defeated Republican candidate, Gov. Alf Landon of Kansas, won only two states, Maine and Vermont, and Democrats controlled both houses of Congress by wide margins.
But Obama's win was nothing like that. He may have opened the door to enactment of the long-deferred liberal agenda, but he neither received a broad mandate from the public nor the needed large congressional majorities.
The Democrats fell several votes short of the 60-vote filibuster-proof Senate that they were seeking and also failed to get rid of a key Senate target: Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Republicans, though discouraged by the election's outcome, believe Obama will be hard-pressed not so much to enact his agenda but to keep his popular majority, which he considers centrist, as he moves to enact ultra-liberal legislation, particularly the demands of organized labor.

A few years ago, Republican strategists were crowing about a new "permanent Republican majority". As of last night, Republicans are a regional party with a narrowly defined ideology and abysmal support among the next generations of voters.
And all it took was, you know, Republicans sucking on every conceivable level, dragging the nation into botched war efforts, corruption in the Department of Justice, and the possible collapse of our entire financial system.
So... yay us, I guess.

The campaigns of McCain and Hillary Rodham Clinton created the impression that half the people in a senior staff meeting would love nothing more than to stick knives in the backs of the other half. You don't sense that with Obama's team. . .
I get a strong sense that we are in for something very different from past Democratic administrations: a White House more cautious and circumspect in its decision-making, more careful and disciplined in its execution.
Then again, the "hoards of bafoons" comment is also delightful.

Mixed Results
Okay so it was fun for the first time to have someone I voted for win the national election. How could I resist when the Republican's kept telling me he is a Socialist. So I figured between him and Brian Moore, I had the better chance of an Obama victory.
But there are a ton of ballot iniatives which did not go well. The one man one woman - marriage thing seems to have support everywhere it was up on the ballot. I still say, lets make it one man one woman and Jesus Christ, and that way the rest of us can have domestic unions. I mean seriously - to give someone your shit (free) after you die one of you has to have a penis and one a vagina? Really? In Arkansas unmarried couples [read: faggot lovers] cannot adopt kids. So those kids get to rot in state homes. Hooray! At least the pro-choice ballot iniatives seem to have had some success. Especially one especially exciting initiative which would have made a fertilized egg a person, wiping out even some forms of birth control. Remember every sperm is sacred.
