However, it's a surprise that they'd want anything more to do with Trachsel, who was 1-3 with an 8.15 ERA after being picked up from the Orioles. They may figure he'd have some trade value at $4.75 million for 2008, but we're guessing they're wrong.

For a presidential administration overwhelmed by humiliating mistakes, the Khaled el-Masri debacle is one of the most mortifying. Masri, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, was taken into custody in 2003 in a case of mistaken identity — he just happens to have a name similar to a terrorist sought by American officials.
Actually, “taken into custody” is the wrong phrase. He was abducted in Macedonia, drugged, beaten, and then flown to Afghanistan, where he faced more abuse. Five months of detention and torture later, the CIA, realizing they took the wrong man, dumped him in Albania. During those five months, Masri’s wife had no idea what had happened to him.
With help from the ACLU, Masri filed a lawsuit against the Bush administration, and the complaint described his treatment as “constituting prolonged arbitrary detention, torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.”
The Bush administration insisted that the federal courts dismiss the case, not because of the merits, but because, administration lawyers argued, to even respond to the lawsuit would require divulging state secrets. Yesterday, the Supreme Court decided not to hear Masri’s case.

The pullback from Monday's 87(degrees) equals the normal decline in temperatures from July to early November--but it's to take place in just two days. A powerhouse eastern Pacific storm, predicted to attain the central pressure of a Category 3 hurricane (963 mb./28.44") for a time Tuesday morning is behind the stunning temperature turnaround. Warmth flooding up that system's east side is to buckle the jet stream northward over western North America--a development which sends a pool of unseasonably cool air plunging southward over the Midwest mid and late week. The cloudy, chilly air mass is to combine with NNE winds Thursday to produce lake-effect rain showers.

It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release.
Within 20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide.
The founder of the company, the SITE Intelligence Group, says this premature disclosure tipped al-Qaeda to a security breach and destroyed a years-long surveillance operation that the company has used to intercept and pass along secret messages, videos and advance warnings of suicide bombings from the terrorist group's communications network.
"Techniques that took years to develop are now ineffective and worthless," said Rita Katz, the firm's 44-year-old founder, who has garnered wide attention by publicizing statements and videos from extremist chat rooms and Web sites, while attracting controversy over the secrecy of SITE's methodology. Her firm provides intelligence about terrorist groups to a wide range of paying clients, including private firms and military and intelligence agencies from the United States and several other countries.

The Dallas Mavericks owner, known for noisily cheering his NBA team and berating officials from courtside, reiterated strong interest Monday in owning the Cubs.
"Everybody thinks I'm going to be on the sidelines, in the dugout, jumping up and down. That's not where I'll be," he said on the Mike North Morning Show on radio station WSCR.
"When I went to the Cubs game a couple weeks ago, I sat in the bleachers, and I'll have a seat marked out for me and my friends. We'll be out in the right-field bleachers -- that's the best place to watch a game."
Tribune Co. announced six months ago that it would sell the club after the season in connection with an $8.2 billion buyout of the media conglomerate led by real estate magnate Sam Zell. But the process has moved slowly and many don't expect a sale to be completed until well into 2008.
Cuban said he hasn't made a final decision on whether to bid for the team. But once Tribune provides full details about the assets for sale, presumably including Wrigley, he expects to be in.
"It's a great sports town, it's a great franchise with a storied history. There's so many opportunities here," he said. "When a team that's so iconic and such an amazing team like the Cubbies come up, it's an opportunity I couldn't let slip by."
After last month's bleacher experience, the Pittsburgh native said he's becoming a Cubs fan. "People think that because I'm not from Chicago, that's a big deal," he said. "I grew up in Pittsburgh, and there's no bigger Dallas Mavs fan now."
"If all this goes down ... if you cut any part of my body, you can see Mavs blood and you can see Cubbies blood coming out." Oct. 8 (Bloomberg) -- NATO's campaign in Afghanistan is under threat from member countries on the front lines clamoring to get out and others on the sidelines refusing to go in.
With military casualties on the increase this year, the Netherlands and Canada are weighing full or partial pullouts within the next 18 months. Meanwhile, leaders in Germany, France, Spain and Italy, mindful of polls showing a majority of Europeans oppose the conflict, are resisting calls to send troops to relieve them.
The European reluctance to fight is making it harder for the 41,000-strong force to consolidate gains against the Taliban, which is battling on in the rugged terrain of southern Afghanistan six years after the U.S. drove it from power in response to the Sept. 11 attacks. Oct. 8 (Bloomberg) -- NATO's campaign in Afghanistan is under threat from member countries on the front lines clamoring to get out and others on the sidelines refusing to go in.
With military casualties on the increase this year, the Netherlands and Canada are weighing full or partial pullouts within the next 18 months. Meanwhile, leaders in Germany, France, Spain and Italy, mindful of polls showing a majority of Europeans oppose the conflict, are resisting calls to send troops to relieve them.
The European reluctance to fight is making it harder for the 41,000-strong force to consolidate gains against the Taliban, which is battling on in the rugged terrain of southern Afghanistan six years after the U.S. drove it from power in response to the Sept. 11 attacks. Cubs or Phillies: Who SUCKS More?
Talk amongst yourselves... though i blame society. Also, there's always next century.
I do know dis: neither suck as much as the CHOKING DOG NEW YORK METS. Remember that.
More good news: with the D-Backs & Rockies (can you say: "Zzzzzzzzzzzz...........") in the NLCS i doubt i will be watching much, if at all. Instead i can catch up with The Bionic Woman (i like me some Michelle Ryan). Which means:
1) NO TBS broadcasters. They all sound a like to me (meaning: Don Sutton) - i can't tell one from the other (except Chip Caray, and that's whole nudder level of annoyance). Though i don't know if TBS is even broadcasting the NLCS. Why are they broadcasting the division series anyway? Have we run out of channels or something?
2) NO more FrankTV ads. Ok, he does a good John Madden, but i don't need to be reminded every phokking half inning that his show starts November 20th. Where? on TBS!
3) NO Dane Cook promos. Yes, i suspect they will continue, which means i won't be watching any more baseball the instant i see his fucking face again (does anyone really think the NL will win this year? Oh ok, the Cards were a surprise last year, but at least they had Pujols and Carpenter. Arizona has Webb, and Colorado has Holliday. Dats about it.) Getting back to Dane Cook: HATE. LOATHING. And MORE HATE. Not funny, and can't act. This is the state of America today: Dane Cook has a career because people think he's funny or some shit. DENVER -- Manager Ozzie Guillen shook up his staff Friday by firing third base coach Razor Shines.
Bullpen coach Art Kusnyer and the team reached an agreement in which Kusnyer will work within the organization but will no longer coach. Kusnyer underwent eye surgery and missed the Sox's road trips in September.
A search will begin immediately to fill both positions.
The firing of Shines is somewhat surprising considering Guillen praised Shines for his work at third in his first season after serving in the Sox's minor league system for six seasons.
But in the past month, Guillen was less committed to bringing back his entire staff. Shines had been praised for his work with the Sox's younger players prior to his appointment as third base coach.
Kusnyer, 61, told friends on Sunday that he was going to step down and that he appreciated the support Kenny Williams provided the staff since taking over as general manager.
Kusnyer was the bullpen coach for 11 seasons and served in the same capacity from 1980-87.
The rest of the coaching staff is expected to stay intact for 2008.

I really appreciate the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce for giving me an opportunity to explain why I have made some of the decisions I have made. My job is a decision-making job. And as a result, I make a lot of decisions.

And so she -- she cares deeply about issues like malaria. She believes like I believe, that we can eliminate the scourge of malaria and save lives all around the world. She cares deeply about literacy. She cares deeply about making sure women have got good information to -- when it comes to healthy choices with their life so they don't suffer from heart ailment. She cares a lot about women in Afghanistan. She cares a lot because she's got a big heart, and I'm sure proud to call her "wife," and I think the country is lucky to have her as the First Lady. (Applause.)
Well, it's too bad you're President then, because you couldn't give a flying fat rat's ass about any of those things.
I am constantly amazed that our country produces people -- decent, honorable people who are willing to serve.
Because I think of myself and I am neither decent or honorable.
One of the issues that we're going to be facing in Washington, D.C. is how to spend your money. In other words, what do we do with the good money that we've -- the good money we've collected? How do we spend it?
Something probably real smart like a trillion dollars frittered away in the desert...
I've submitted my budget, the core principle of which is that we will do what it takes to defend our homeland and make sure our troops have what it takes to do their jobs -- (applause) -- and keep your taxes low by not raising them. And we showed the way forward on how to get to balance in the year 2012. In other words, you got to be fiscally responsible, set priorities with your money, and keep your taxes low.
That's is a HYOOOGE pile of BULL$#i+ right there... 1) Troops don't have what it takes to do their jobs - from day freakin' one. 2) Balanced budget by the year 2012? While cleaning up your mess in Iraq while lowering taxes again? Yeah, and Smiff will have hair by 2012, too. 3) Fiscally reponsible? How does he say that without his tongue detaching and rolling out of his mouth?
And one of the principles on which I'm making decisions is I'd rather the Chrysts spending their money than the government spending their money. See, I think they know how to spend their money in such a way that their business will grow.

As a matter of fact, a five-year budget that's submitted by the current leadership of the Congress increases spending by $205 billion over five years, which would -- and so you say, that's fine, sounds good, all these programs sound wonderful. Except how you going to pay for it? That's the question I ask. How are you going to pay for the promises? And the answer is, raising taxes.
How about ending the war in Iraq and spend the money here? We always seem to have the money for wars, shit blowing up and people dying and stuff, but not for stuff here. Just spitballin'...
I'll use the prerogative given to me under the Constitution, and I'm going to veto the tax bills.

Ultimately, the lesson is that misery loves company: many of the same teams that have vanquished a choker have been the victim at another point in time. That could mean that the Cubs are due to make a big comeback at some point in the 2007 playoffs.
The Cubs actually were a vanquisher at one point. They were the team that took advantage of Fred Merkle’s blunder to steal the 1908 pennant from the New York Giants. Importantly, that was the last time they won the World Series. But they’ve since accumulated a significant karma surplus because of 2003 and 1969, not to mention 1984.
So really, all of this is going to plan. It’s the Cubs’ turn to pull off a spectacular comeback. In fact, you should be actively rooting for the Diamondbacks to build up a big lead in Game 3. 5-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth? 13-4? 30-3 and Geovany Soto is down to his last strike? All the better from a karma perspective.
Unless, of course, I have reversed jinxed the Cubs and angered the karma gods by revealing all of this.

Peacock 'fell in love with car'
Visitors to a Somerset stately home have been warned to keep away from a peacock - after he seriously damaged a luxury car he mistook for a mate.
The amorous bird caused £4,000 worth of damage to an employee's Lexus in the grounds of Sir Benjamin Slade's country manor, Maunsel House, near Bridgwater.
Warning signs have now been put up in the car park.
"It started when he fell in love with a Lexus, which was in a very distinct peacock blue," said Sir Benjamin.
"He attacked the panels so hard that the car needs a total respray. The insurers are not very happy about it.
"They've had claims for all sorts of things like lions biting people, but never have they heard of a peacock sexually attacking a car before," he added.
Sir Benjamin has offered to give away his 13th Century ancestral home to anyone distantly related to him.

In a meeting with reporters, he puts Chicago’s bid behind Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Madrid, Spain, and Tokyo. He made a similar observation in a meeting Thursday morning with Mayor Richard M. Daley, he said.
All cities have strong leadership, he said in the meeting with reporters. For Tokyo, "the Japanese are putting in much more in the way of assets and efforts for their bid," Mr. Ueberroth said...

Craig vows to stay despite court loss
Idaho Sen. Larry Craig defiantly vowed to serve out his term in office on Thursday despite losing a court attempt to rescind his guilty plea in a men's room sex sting. "I have seen that it is possible for me to work here effectively," Craig said in a written statement certain to disappoint fellow Republicans who have long urged him to step down. Craig had earlier announced he would resign his seat by Sept. 30, but had wavered when he went to court in hopes of withdrawing his plea.

TBS cameras caught Rockies closer Manny "The Cheater" Corpas pouring a cup of water or soda on the front of his shirt before leaving the bullpen to pitch the ninth inning of Wednesday's game and then rubbing dirt on the area. A stunning turn of events, if only because TBS actually was back in time for the first pitch of that inning. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Corpas appeared to go to the spot on his jersey before several of his pitches. It'd be illegal for him to intentionally apply a substance to his jersey for a better grip on the ball, though it'd hardly make him unique if he were doing it.

Boutique hotel planned near Wrigley Field

(Crain’s) — A Chicago investment firm that owns a stake in the Drake Hotel is developing a high-end boutique hotel just around the corner from Wrigley Field.
A partnership led by Lodging Capital Partners LLC has started converting two small apartment and retail buildings at 3473-3475 N. Clark St. into a hotel that would have about 20 rooms, says Lodging Capital Principal Steven Kisielica. The firm has teamed up with property owner Tim Collins on the $5-meeellion project.
Wrigley Field is just "800 steps away," which should work in the hotel’s favor, Mr. Kisielica says...
The Wrigleyville hotel, which has yet to be named, will include a restaurant and bar operated by a well-known Chicago restaurateur, Mr. Kisielica says. The development group has already begun gutting the two buildings on Clark Street and plans to open the hotel as early as next summer.

Things That Suck (Late Edition)
There's been so much sucking the past week, it's been hard to keep up with it all.
1) Dumbya. Not even the Mets can knock Pres. Dumbbell from the top of the heap. This morning, in a dark room far from the media glare, he vetoed the SCHIP bill (signing in crayon), quietly explaining, "I talked this one over with God and he said he could use more childrens with him in heaven. I only wish we could deny more health care to kids so more of them could be with God."
2) The Choking Dog New York Mets. '64 Phillies were still probably worse choke-wise, but at least they were playing good teams down the stretch.
3) San Diego Padres. Not much offense left, but this collapse was squarely on the pitching staff. Peavy had a bad game and Hoffman totally sucked, but let's not forget starting Brett Tomko in a big game, who couldn't hold a 4-0 lead. He sucked again this year, but look for him on a big league roster again next year.
4) The umpires in that game. Holliday didn't touch home plate, and Atkins probably homered. What good are those umpires in the OF when they're standing about 10 feet from the 1st and 3rd base umpires? Move your asses, you fat phokks.
5) Notre Dame. Will the sucking ever end? Does Weis just eat the game plans? Well, they might beat Duke.
6) San Diego Chargers. Norv happens.
7) The state of college football. I mean, Cal & South Florida are amoung the top rated teams in the country?
8) Syracuse & Northern Illinois: even with all the mediocrity around, they're even worse than that.
9) Chicago Bears quarterbacks and the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line.

Scott Schoeneweis received six steroid shipments from Signature Pharmacy while playing for the White Sox in 2003 and 2004, ESPN is reporting. Just keep kicking the Mets while they're down. The source who reviewed the invoices said that Schoeneweis spent $1,160 on the steroids. He received five packages from May 2003 through 2004, five of which contained testosterone and three of which contained stanozolol. Schoeneweis just finished the first year of his three-year, $10.8 million contract with the Mets. He had a 5.03 ERA in 59 innings.

Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey was arrested early this morning in St. Petersburg and charged with driving under the influence, hit-and-run with damage and resisting arrest without violence. The Rays could already justify firing Hickey based on performance alone. Now maybe they'll go ahead and go it. Hickey presided over what was easily the game's worst pitching staff in his first year on the job.

Standing room only tickets for game three of the Cubs/Diamondbacks series at Wrigley Field are going for as little as $144.00 and I'm sure the people who buy these will have to ask after the game if the Cubs won or lost.
