Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs have agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $91.5 million, with a player option for a sixth season at $19.25 million.
In other words, it's essentially a six-year, $111 million extension. Zambrano must really like Chicago, because the deal is shorter than those handed out to top-tier free agent starters over the past several years and the total commitment is $15 million less than Barry Zito received from the Giants during the offseason. Tommy John only knocks a guy out for a year or so, with this contract if he gets hurt it'll be a labrum or rotator cuff which most pitchers never come back from.
